We did not know to make reservations ahead of time and did not realize the surrounding area is a massive tourist town as we were just driving through in our RV. It's a little ways off the highway, 10-15 minutes and then we had to wait a few hours until the next tour had room.
It is a stunning little ride, with amazingly close rock walls the wagon goes between. Interesting rock formations, beautiful nature and a really interesting tour guide we thoroughly enjoyed. He taught us a great deal about the area, some history and we saw some deer as well.
We asked about the care of the horses and it seems as if they are rotated and treated appropriately. I wish the owner didnt sell them off once retired and too old to work but I understand the cost of drafts during the winter is probably high.
It is awkward that halfway through you stop and the your guide sells keychains/postcards/magnets etc but we usually pick up a keychain and magnet most places we go anyway so we did not mind as much as others but be sure to bring cash. You will also want to tip (or I would hope you want to tip and be a decent human being!) They also allowed a few minutes before we started to pet the draft horses and 2 lucky kids got to feed them carrots.
Overall a very nice experience and we were glad we waited. They also have a private little area across the street on the lake and invite you to use the picnic tables there and enjoy after the tour.
If you have a big rig there is a small parking lot right before the entrance for the tour. There is also a parking lot across the street but it seemed busy so I would suggest RVs hit the first...
Read moreThis is probably under-rated, but 4.5 stars isn't allowed and I don't quite think this is a 5-star location. That said, Lost Canyon is a neat family-owned business where you ride a horse-drawn wagon through the canyon. The staff is knowledgeable about how the canyon was most likely formed and I learned something new in the Dells for the first time in years. In fact, thinking back, I learned a lot about draft horses, the wagons they pull, what formed the canyon, what formed the stone, the fox that lives within the canyon, business history and potential future for the canyon, and the "normal" rock formation images.
For those seasoned in the Dells, you understand that the guides ask for donations because they work on minimal salaries. Most of these center around post cards or different tourist type items. Lost Canyon is similar in this regard; however they also sell the previous horseshoes used by the horses pulling your wagon. This is one of the neatest items we have purchased in the Dells because it is a direct tie to something we did. The horse shoe did cost $20, but is one of a my favorite items simply for the direct tie to our experience.
Where I think Lost Canyon lacks is the facility and wagons are dated. Although the horses and wagons seem well cared for, it feels slightly grungy. I don't think this necessitates a full 1 star dock, but I also can't justify 5 stars based on the dated nature of the...
Read moreI was looking forward to this experience that It had to be the first one I did in Wisconsin dells, but was very upset at the way I was treated , it was 7 of us I paid for everyone about $140 and Josh was the one giving us the tour made me changed seats 3 times . Initially I was seated in the third row right behind my family it was me and two kids then he made us moved to the first row and then moved us to all the way in the back with my 7 year old. Because he decided to put two other Caucasian couples in front. I felt very much like it was discrimination although I even insisted If we could just wait for the next cart ride so I can be with family together he insisted we just moved to the back he stated it will be the same thing . Although I brought along with me 7 people me and my family basically filled half of the cart. my son who was the main horse lover in the family and the reason I wanted to come to this place was because of him he was not able to see the horses from all the way in the back with all the adults in front of him. I did not enjoyed the experience all other activities I was never separated from my family we did all as a whole and had a great time except for this one . Will never come back here again and made sure to make everyone else aware of that place as well. I had the right to sit wherever I initially seated I’m a paying customer just...
