There are not enough words to say how much I have come to love Teddywedgers. I am here on a good week at least two or three times (this is not including how often people bring me a pasty knowing it's my favorite). The owners and the staff alike are incredibly kind and hard working individuals. I've left here feeling like I'm leaving a friend's house on numerous occasions. These are great people making great food. As for the pasties, it is shocking how obsessed I have become. I highly encourage you to always ask about the special, as you are sure to be met with something that is out of the box in terms of creativity, piping hot and insanely tasty. If the special isn't what you're looking for I often go for the Southwest for breakfast and the Chicken Pot Pie or the Sweet Potato for lunch/dinner. That being said, I frequently make sure to rotate my choices as every option is brilliant and I could never choose just one favorite. The handmade cookies are well priced and so good. On the occasion that they have dessert specials I like to grab one as well because they are -surprise- amazing. They even have a cool collection of sodas I don't tend to see other places and Slide chips (locally made and delicious potato chips in a massive range of flavors). If you like hot sauce make sure to ask the cashier what their recommendation is. If you want mine, I like the Sauer's and the Zesty Tobasco. Have I mentioned the price? A full pasty for less than $10 has certainly fueled my twedge craze these last few months.
Teddywedgers holds a very special place in my heart. I am fortunate to be located so closely and to have been warmly embraced by the crew. If there is any review worth leaving, it is to say that I am beyond enthralled with this classic...
Read moreA true gem. One of my favorite Madison spots, and has been for decades now. Time to show a little love, as I sit here enjoying the daily special - a corned beef hash pasty. I always order them whole, and never cut in half. Just how I like to roll. Give it a try!
I still remember stopping here in high school and hee-hawing with Myles who was always the consummate restaurateur and host. He looked gruff - like a Cornish miner - but had a heart of gold. In the evenings, when he was shutting down, he’d carefully wrap the leftover pasties and leave them at the bus stop directly outside his shop. A lot of folks who were down on their luck congregated there and Myles, as a true Christian who I venture to guess actually read the Bible, went out of his way to give what he could to help them out. I’ll never forget that, the goodwill and values he demonstrated to his community.
Later on when I worked as a bike messenger, and often found myself in immediate need of 2,000 or so calories, I would stop in to see Myles and order a Big Cheezy. Never cut in half, you’ll recall. And it always did the trick.
I don’t know the name of the young man who bought or took over the place, but I do know that he’s almost always there working and that he seems to have changed very little about the business. Both of these are big thumbs up in my book. Here’s to decades more authentic (and pretty regularly creative) Cornish pasties at Teddywedgers...
Read moreThe restaurant is under new ownership, and just reopened in the last couple weeks. The previous owner carried the recipes over from the original owner, Myles. They were excellent authentic Cornish Pasties.
This new owner must not have gotten the pasty recipes in the deal. They currently only have a couple breakfast pasties and one lunch menu option, the ground beef pasty. So I went with the the ground beef pasty.
This pasty was like eating an unseasoned dry hamburger wrapped in slightly overcooked pie crust. There was no hint of potatoes, onions, or anything but ground beef inside it. The portion size was about half the size of what the original pasties were. This actually was fine since it took a full can of soda to make it through the size that it was because it was so dry.
I will not eat there again. I can't wait to see what will take its place next. Too bad since Teddywedger's has been in that location...
