Great place, I've watched it evolve from just a source of inexpensively priced food to a place that has that and just about any organic product you want, plus an amazing produce section, not to mention the ethnic foods, over some 30 years.
The only unfortunate thing is during the coronavirus pandemic, they don't offer the order online with pickup that Walmart does. I don't like shopping at Walmart because they don't have the selection and they don't have the quality, but I'm forced to because I do not want to become infected. When the pandemic ends, or Sherms starts offering pickup, I'll be back. But not until then.
Edit 04/18/20. Couldn't stay away. The products at Walmart and the produce just don't measure up. So after shopping as much as I could at Costco, which obviously cares about the health of their customers, as every employee was wearing a mask (and I know what a sacrifice that is after wearing one for just a few hours), and so were most of the customers, with someone wiping down the shopping baskets with disinfectant before you got them, and big efforts to keep people spaced six feet and more apart, I headed to Food 4 Less.
Wow it's so 2019 there! It's almost as if the coronavirus thing never happened. No one's wearing masks, it's fairly crowded with a group that clearly doesn't care, and the whole attitude screams we don't care about our customers health. So despite the fresh broccoli, and the wonderfully crisp bell peppers, it's not worth swapping your life for.
I don't mean to brag, but I don't look at prices when I shop. It wasn't always that way when I first started shopping at Food 4 Less on a poor church mouse budget some 30 years ago, but it is today. So here I am probably one of the most profitable shoppers at Food 4 Less. And you just told me to go away--- and stay away.
I get it if the vast majority of your customer base doesn't believe in the Coronavirus-- until they start loosing some family to it, but why don't you help them start thinking about their own health instead of dragging them down? Go take a tour of Costco, and at least try to do what they're doing. It would show that you actually care about your customers!
Edit 5/20/20
Well I visited again, but after Costco made it mandatory that all customers wear face masks while in the store to protect all of us from all of us (Thank you Costco!), I'm trying to focus most of my purchasing power on Costco rather than Food 4 Less. I would focus all of it on Costco but there are some things that Costco doesn't carry and so I end up having to go into Food 4 Less, even though they're not enforcing any kind of mandatory mask-wearing in the store to protect not only their customers but their employees. It's a very short-sighted lack of policy.
I'm going to spend some time looking around for a general grocery store in Medford where mask wearing is required to be in the store. And of course, shift all my purchasing power away from Food 4 Less after some 35 years of business. Very sad.
Edit 12/22/2020
Now that every reasonable person has finally gotten religion on covid, the store has required masking on everyone, as per the governor's order. The issue was that I felt the store management let ideology get in the way of customer safety early on. I still shop there, but I'm not happy with their response. Late, and begrudging. That said I've moved my rating up a few stars, to reflect the fact that they are now responsive to...
Read moreIf you want eye-searing brightness levels, a disinfected, sterile environment and soothing music; do not shop here! As a foodie recently moved here, I investigated all of the big markets before committing to this one. Why? Because it is a gourmet's Disneyland. You never know what you will find, but it will be fresh, different and reasonably priced. Examples: Oysters in the shell - 60 cents each. Fresh Sand Dabs, Red Snapper and Rex Sole at low prices. Meats from the local 4H programs. Persimmons at 60% of the cost of the "nice" stores. A great selection of organic and bulk foods. I have never seen the "fruit flies" mentioned by one reviewer, but if they are present, it's because Sherm's sells ripe, ready-to-eat fruit and vegetables; not the "Movie Set " fruit that you find at other markets - you know, the fruit that looks glorious in the store, but at home transitions from rock hard to compost in a very short time, completely skipping the ripe stage. And, oh, for Ex-Pats and Anzacs - Vegemite; Marmite; Branson's Pickles; Coleman's Mustard Powder. Fresh stock on the shelves, and comparable pricing to Amazon and other online stores. I get excited just walking through the doors on a Saturday morning as the shopping experience ( which is always pleasant) is never the same for me.
PS- my name is not that foreign; it's just spelled backwards as an...
Read moreReally enjoy the meat selection here, stopped by after work ( I work at a grocery store and I still stop here for what I need) to grab some tri tip around 305-25pm and there were two gentlemen infront of the meat. One was a worker he had on all black and blue gloves,a hat and glasses. The other man was a customer and he was asking about the steaks, as I picked my steak the worker was telling him what he liked and the only things he would eat and not really giving much else feedback on why other then this steak sucks or that steak sucks and what he prefers. So as he pointed to my steak of choice( tri tip) that I grabbed to buy he said it was chewy that some liked it but he thinks it’s gross. I told the customer who looked at me with it my opinion on some of the meat he was referring too. I said tri tip is pretty good especially if it’s marbled and the London broil isn’t to bad either it’s leaner but juicer. The meat guy worker got really pissy and very rudely said WHO ASKED YOU?? DID I ASK YOU???I just thought that was very uncalled for. I almost put my steak back isn’t the point of a job customer service and to sell the product?? Everyone else is always great. 2 stars just from this one experience.
red flag they only respond back to good reviews. Sad because I thought they cared about...
