I will preface this review by saying I gave one star because you have to give some kind of stars to make a comment, but if I could give negative stars, I would do it. I purchased a hat at this store as a Christmas gift for a young man with autism. He loved the hat, and Christmas was passed, so I didn’t see a need to save the receipt. About a month after Christmas, the young man brought it to my attention that the security device had been left on the hat (the store’s fault), and he was unable to wear it. He also expressed that he was afraid to go in the store and asked them to remove it for him because he didn’t purchase the hat and he was afraid because he’s a young man they would think that he stole the hat and take it away from him. So I took the hat and brought it to the store. I brought it in in a bag with the tags that said Spencer‘s and the price intact. I asked one employee and she said they were not able to remove the security tag unless they had a receipt. She was very polite and said let me get my manager though and see what they can do for you… indicating that the manager does have a right to make a different decision. The manager was a woman probably my age or older. I am 55. The hat clearly was not stolen as I was seen walking into the store with it. It had all the tags intact including the Spencer’s tag. I explained the situation to the manager. The manager who was already showing her an annoyance that I was bothering her by the look on her face, spoke in an agitated tone. I myself used to be a retail manager, and I never talked to people that way. This is how you lose customers. I pleaded with her to take the device off because otherwise I paid $25 for this hat that is now useless. She told me I could call the home office and see if they could produce my receipt. So I asked her for the home office number and she very huffily printed a small receipt, grabbed it and thrust it at me. I said to her, you can see that I did not steal this hat, and you can also clearly see that it was purchased at this store, but again she said we can’t take it off without a receipt In a very aggressive tone. My take away from this is that Spencer‘s stance is that they are fine with taking my $25 and not correcting their own mistake. Fortunately, I have a friend that works in a retail store and I took it to her and she took the tag off for me because she knows I’m not a thief and she thought it was not only was it ridiculous that they wouldn’t remove the tag, but the way they treated me was abhorrent. Regardless of the policy, and even if they weren’t going to remove the tag, a good customer service employee is still kind and polite. In the end, my happy friend can now wear his hat. In the future, I will purchase items like this on Amazon. The prices are overly inflated anyway, and then get away with it because they sell to young people who want the items so bad they will pay...

I recently visited this store, and honestly, it was a pretty uncomfortable experience. The two older women working there kept hovering over me and my boyfriend like we were going to steal something. It kind of ruined the vibe of the store; I felt more like a suspect than a shopper!
She didn’t even greet us. When we picked up one shirt she made sure to tell us not to put it in the wrong place….
It’s a shame because I would have loved to browse and spend more money if I felt welcome. I really hope they rethink their approach to customer service. Just a little trust...

We were frequent customers and the staff were very kind and welcoming people. Sadly that is not the case anymore. The new staff is extremely rude, crass and unwelcoming.
If you want geek wear go to hot topic and if you want anything adult go to a place that is actually worth while that sells quality items. The staff originally balanced that. They were kind and welcoming. Now that's gone as is any reason to visit.
Don't waste your time with this place. It's gone...
