My granddaughters Blythe and Bella visiting from NC wanted to learn how to surf. They are 13 and 9 years old. I thought the best way to start would be a private lesson. I went into the Cayucos Surf Shop and inquired about private lessons. They gave me the name of Nate Webberson of Cal Coast Adventures.
I called Nate and scheduled a lesson for the next day. From start to finish I could tell Nate had a passion for teaching/coaching and surfing. I watched the entire lesson and never once did I see the concern look on either face. Nothing but smiles and eagerness to learn. They were sad when the session ended.
Cal Coast Adventures’ equipment was top notch. The wetsuits fit properly and the boards we're appropriate size.
My girls, we're so ”stoked” after the lesson ended and wanted to surf the next day. Nate was not available the next day. So we looked online for lessons. We found a company that did group lessons in Pismo. Their ad said no more than 5 kids per instructor. We arrived, first thing noticeable was bad equipment. Wetsuits had large holes in them. Boards that looked very old and no leash. I inquired about the no leash. I was told the ocean wasn't very deep where they taught. Seriously? We should have left immediately.
I could tell there was no structure at all. One cannot give a child a surfboard and give them 15 minutes of instructions and expect them to ”get it”. About three-quarters of the way through, my girls were done. They got too cold because of the holes in their suits and kept dodging surfboards of kiddos who did not know what to do.
The price difference between the companies was a matter of a few dollars.
Thank you Cal Coast Adventures and Nate. They will see you again in December. Thank you for everything.

Read moreI spent two great days with these folks and they deserve every one of their five stars. I rented an e-bike for the first day. It looked brand new and stood up well to about 16 miles of biking over roads, gravel, and dirt. The e-assist is fantastic. I biked up some hills that would have had me walking a normal bike, and it felt like I was pedaling on flat ground. The helmet and lock were free with the rental, which was great because I was traveling fairly light and didn't pack either in my luggage. The staff were great, and gave some good recommendations on where to explore around the bay.
On my second day, I had a private surf lesson with Hayley. I couldn't have asked for a better teacher! It was my first time on a surfboard, and I'm a little nervous around waves, and she was extremely patient and encouraging with me. She took care of all the tough parts - timing the waves, positioning the board, etc., and I got to do the cool stuff! I managed to stand up on the board a bunch of times, and she gave me a bunch of advice so that I could handle more on my next time out. I had...
Read moreI wish I could give Cal Coast 10 stars.. they were outstanding! I live in Morro Bay... haven't been on a bike in over 10 years.. I'm not a "youngster" and the balance isn't what it use to be. I'm in the market for an electric bike and wanted to test drive a bike before I made the investment. This shop is very busy... one would think.. given the above... that they would take one look and wonder why I was there. That was furthest from the truth. Nathan, the owner and Barrett, who is my new super hero, were patient, respectful, informative, helpful and beyond supportive. Barrett selected two bikes for me to try and the one he selected was spot on. After assisting me and insuring that I was "ready to ride"... off I went and had a blast. In the event you purchase a bike (they don't sell bikes but offer this service) Barrett is a master mechanic and will assist you with fit or general repair and maintenance. Both Barrett and Nathan are experts. Lucky Morro Bay!!! What an asset to...
