“This memorial serves as a marker for America’s merchant mariners resting in the unmarked ocean depths.” Twice a day one of the statues "drowns" as he's covered by water at high tide, just out of reach of his fellow seamen who are trying to rescue him. The sculpture is based on the real life event of the sinking of the Muskogee during World War 2.

The American Merchant Mariners’ Memorial is a historical landmark located in Battery Place in Lower Manhattan, New York, NY by the waterfront. It’s a major sculptural work by Marisol Escobar and was dedicated on October 8, 1991. The memorial depicts a merchant marine vessel that was sunk in WWII.

i liked the architecture of this statues This memorial has been ingeniously done to pay tribute to the merchant mariners who lost their lives at sea. As the tides ebb and flow the sculpture reveals Major sculptural work & memorial depicting a merchant marine vessel that was sunk in WWII.

Located in New York Harbor, this memorial serves as a remembrance for all of America’s merchant sailors resting in unmarked ocean depths. During World War II, the Merchant Marine suffered a higher casualty rate than any of the other military services. From the Battery Park Esplanade, in New York City, the Memorial is viewed against the background of the harbor, the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island. The Memorial is located on a historic section of granite breakwater, completely surrounded by salt water. Due to this harsh environment, regular cleaning and maintenance...
