I don't leave reviews often. But this place is so terrible that I have to say something to warn others to keep away from this hotel!
I have stayed at many hotels over the years, including many DoubleTrees, but sadly, this is the worst one I have ever stayed at!!! When I got to my room on the first day, a jacket was hanging on the door handle and cleaning supplies and tools were outside the door. I was afraid to go in because I didn't want to walk in on someone (which happened to me when I stayed at a Hilton in Memphis last year, and was super embarrassing because that hotel double booked for the room I already paid for!)
The housekeeping lady eventually came out from the room across the hall and gathered her stuff, but not before I gave her the side eye for leaving her stuff on the handle of my room door. She didn't even apologize, but looked at me like it was nothing to be greeted by someone else's stuff when you check into a hotel. It is a massive TURNOFF to be greeted by someone else's stuff when you wanna check in to the room.
Ok then after she gathered her stuff, I was able to check into the room. I was in a king room, which was smaller than what I saw in the pics online. The bed was fine but the room itself felt like a college dorm...not a lot of space at all. Also, there is no fridge in the room, just a small cooler and it wasn't clear how the cooler even worked. I put my hand in it but it wasn't even cold!!!!!
On my second day there, I ran the water for 20 minutes so I could get cold water to drink with my medicine. Yes the water went from hot to warm but it took 20 minutes for it to get to cold. Who the hell wants warm water with their medicine in the morning? At least if they had a fridge I could have stocked up on bottled waters and overlooked having to wait 20 mins for something so simple.
This is what I found most egregious on my second day: breakfast took 45 mins to get to my room and it still wasn't right!!!!!!!! I ordered room service because I needed to work at the tiny desk in the room. When I submitted, it estimated 25-30 minutes, so I was pretty annoyed that it took 45 mins just for an omelette and potatoes. I spent $18 just for the meal alone, and I was surprised by how small it was and how long it took to get there. I spent an extra $5 for apple juice to come with my meal, but it was delivered with no juice!!!! I asked the server about it when he delivered my meal and he looked at me like I had two heads. I had to find my order and show him that I actually ordered apple juice to go with my meal when he wanted to argue with me.
He looked shocked and said "ok I'll be back in 5 mins with it". Well 20 minutes later he came back with my apple juice -- it was warm not even cold apple juice. I didn't know I had to specify that I like my juice cold like every other human being on the planet!! Who wants warm apple juice with their half eaten, expensive breakfast? I figured they sent up warm apple juice just to be petty -- I smelled it twice to make sure it wasn't piss instead! Probably was late because, as others have mentioned, the elevators are old and incredibly slow !!! During my stay, guests remained consistently frustrated at this hotel by the lackluster elevator service.
All in all, I'm giving this place 1 star, and that's still too high. 0 is more accurate. Between the stuff blocking my way from entering my hotel door, the dorm-like feel of the room, the lack of an actual refrigerator, the warm sink water, and the lackluster service with room service, I can tell you that I will never ever stay at this hotel again. I travel to NYC often for work and personal (I'm originally from there), but this spot gives Hilton a terrible name and will never see me there again. The highest compliment I can pay it: the warm cookies each day were great, but cannot make up for all of the above.
I'm also a silver Hilton Honors member; I shudder to think what non Hilton members suffer through at this place! Next time I'm going to FiDi...
Read moreI wish I could say my stay was a 10/10, but it sadly was not. This property is in a very nice location of Manhattan, and the building itself is very clean and well-kept, however I would not stay here again. During my recent stay my partner and I (and several other strangers) got stuck in one of the hotel elevators for 30 minutes. One might think this is out of the hotel staff's control, which in retrospect it is, however the staffs management of the situation was unprofessional and immature. Once we got stuck, we hit the call button to the front desk and it did not work, the light in the button didn't even glow. We tried to hit the fire dept. button and that one didn't work either. Every button that is in an elevator to call for help in a situation like this one, did NOT work! The only button that did work was the alarm button which could not be heard by anyone of importance. We were stuck long enough that another person in the elevator had to call their family member in the hotel to go to the front desk to alert them of our situation; once they spoke to the front desk, then they began answering our calls on the elevator. There was zero urgency, care or concern from the staff we spoke to while stuck. They couldn't give us an ETA for when help would be arriving, or who "help" was. One staff member even claimed we didn't press the help buttons in the elevator and it was our fault for not calling the front desk, which I promptly replied "Well, if your elevator buttons worked, maybe you would have known sooner." The staff did NOTHING to deescalate our situation and couldn't even be bothered to tell us everything was going to be okay. 10 minutes went by without hearing anything so I called the front desk on my cellphone, a staff member picked up, I stated I was stuck in the elevator, and they hung up on me! I was livid. So, I called the fire department and explained our situation so that we could be rescued. Another 10 minutes goes by and finally a staff member of the hotel opened the elevator doors for us. After walking down 18 flights and greeting the front desk with my concerns about the situation, it was explained to us that they don't have an in-house engineer to fix elevator disruptions and they needed to call one from another doubletree, hence the reason why were were trapped for so long, which is what could have been explained to us while inside the elevator. We were offered to have one day taken off of our reservation which we accepted, however the inconvenience and unprofessionalism alone was enough to make me want a full refund. I also figure I should mention that the elevators (aside from this fiasco) do not work well! After checking in, my partner and I realized that you have to wait 15+ minutes for the elevators to even reach your floor. Every time we had to wait for the elevator during our stay, we waited more than 10 minutes and even walked down 22 flights of stairs on 3 different occasions because waiting for the elevator just wasted our time. You could also hear the elevator pass the floor you were waiting on multiple occasions almost as if the buttons didn't work......So, my friends who are considering spending an evening or two here: If you have no problem being delayed by your hotel's elevator for 15+ minutes, or getting stuck in it, I would say this is your place! If either of the two reasons above bother you, stay...
Read moreUpon our arrival at this establishment I was still fuming about being forced to slum it across the Atlantic (in club world) and I was eager to get to a comfy bed. The first inconvenience occurred when we were directed to use a lift to reach the salle d'attente on the second floor, cue the PA struggling to fit my 15 piece matching set of Louis Vuitton luggage (and his back pack) into the rather tight elevator. I left the PA to carry out all the check in formalities, however I was rather flabbergasted to see him spinning a wheel as if he was some kind of game show host. It was then back to the elevator to reach our room on the 23rd floor, this is where problems started as all the lifts were full of other patrons; I instructed the PA that he would have to take the stairs with my 15 piece matching set of Louis Vuitton luggage. I eventually managed to get myself into an elevator after being told to go in sideways and not touch the sides. Obscenities began to be shouted towards the PA when he finally showed up to the 23rd floor because he hadn’t left me the room key, he then ushered me into the room which was rather diminutive. First thing I noticed was how cold the room was and I had visions of having to sleep in my morning dress, the PA found the thermoregulator and turned up the temperature; what a mistake that was at it sounded like the PA had started a diesel generator. For a quick dinner I allowed the PA fetch something called a “takeout” however he hadn’t picked up any silverware, I found some coffee stirrers in the room and we had to make do with those to eat the Mac’n’cheese (pasta and a cheese sauce). The beds were incredibly comfortable which resulted in both of us feeling very refreshed come dawn, this came in handy for the PA as due to the popularity of the lifts there was a wait so I demanded to be carried down the stairs (I don’t like burning calories unnecessarily). The gentleman on the ground floor was always very courteous and I tipped my top hat each time we passed. It was a little disappointing to find the housekeeper hadn’t cleared any of our detritus we’d left beside the receptacle, likewise the coffee stirrers weren’t replenished which resulted in the PA having a mac’n’cheese flavoured coffee. For our early flight from JFK I requested the PA to request a station wagon from reception, this was met with blank stares resulting in us vulnerable gentleman having to brave the conditions at an ungodly hour trying to flag down a cabriolet. Ultimately despite the few negatives our weekend retreat at the DoubleTree New York Downtown was pleasant and enjoyable, if the PA booked this boarding house again I would be...
