The New York Knickerbockers (now the moniker of Manhattanâs NBA basketball team, the âKnicksâ) were the first baseball team to don baseball caps, in 1849. Since then the world is crazy for this invasive style, supplanting almost all others including the historic designs of most of the worldâs military, police and even overgrowing the US Navyâs white cotton Gob caps.
For any group that wants to convey a team or military âall for one and one for allâ motif, baseball caps are rigueur.
You can buy online for bupkis but you must select from tiny images that tell you nothing about the feel of fabric, fit or true color.
Or, you can stroll 125th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues, in Harlem, until you reach Diallo where you can hold, feel and actually try on caps from among many hundreds of examples. Maybe thousands.
I remember the way hats used to be â 6 panel wool, sewn crown eyelets, leather or pure cotton sweat bands, and a felt logo stitched on.
Now, they come with a big gold sticker on the top side of the peak proclaiming something or other and a square tag dangling from somewhere around the backside.
Do not remove these labels â they are part of the style.
What to do when you really need a St Louis Cardinal bright red wool cap and this is your last trip to the USA? Go the land of a thousand caps up on 125th Street.

Read moreI was looking forward to being a frequent and loyal customer however my experience was less than satisfactory!! I was told that the glitch on the website to change shipping address was âno big deal just email or text me your order # and the correct address.â I was still skeptical and voiced my concern. I made it abundantly clear I did not want to purchase the hat unless it could be shipped to the proper address. I was assured it would be no problem just go ahead and order it right now then text me the address. Of course when I got the confirmation email that it was on the way the address was still incorrect. I reached out with no luck!! Mind u when he was trying to make the sale he had no problem answering the phone three separate time that day and as soon as I made the purchaseâŚnothing no answer no response to texts. You lost a great potential customer I buy 5 to 10 $60 hats every 3 months for my son and he always wants the latest special edition. I will not be purchasing from this website or store ever again. Even an apology for dropping the ball would have maybe changed my view however they donât care only thinking about that one sale not the future! There loss I would have been supporting their business for years to come instead they made $79 off me when it could have...
Read moreMy experience at this establishment was quite brief when I managed to get the workerâs attention. There were no prices listed on the hats that I saw, so I had to ask how much they were. The worker replied that they are all 50 bucks and I almost cracked up. Some of these hats that they are charging 50 for you can get for like 10-15 bucks by the dude hanging outside of Yankees Stadium or some random Bronx spot on the street. I also checked online out of curiosity and yep you guessed it, significantly cheaper for these hats online as well. I recognize that some of these hats are âcool or limited editionâ so all the fashion fanatics are willing to pay the 50, but I have literally seen some of the same go for so much less. If you desperately need a specific limited edition hat that this place has, and you are not willing to order online or just wait for the next guy by the field to toss one your way for fast food change, then I guess go for it. I am just unfortunately not in that crowd. I went to another store and bought a hat, shirt, and shorts for less than that so I think...
