If you want to do something fun with some friends, why not try and escape room.
My friends and I tried our luck at two: The Haunted Hotel on 7/25 and Mountaintop Murders on 8/29.
Haunted Hotel - Houdini themed seance was the background story.
You have one hour to finish, and we came close but we did not escape the room. There are so many puzzles and things to unlock. You are given an iPad where you can ask for hints, it also displays the time you have left.
One thing to note, I recommend bringing magnifying glass and flashlight. There was a lock that we had a hard time figuring out because we are older and your eyes are blurry.
This room was fun, but is definitely challenging.
Great escape offers a deal to purchase discounted tickets for another room, if you buy them same day. So we liked it so much we bought these tickets. There is no receipt for these and you cannot book the room online. You have to call with the name of the person who booked the original room. You will also need to know the date you attended the last room. No issues and I was able to book room 2. I do recommend calling in advance because their rooms do get booked up, so don' t wait till the last minute.
Mountaintop Murders - Story centers around trying to find your Nana, who went missing. Our host was Angelica and our game master ( person who provides the clues) was May.
This one was very tricky even with all the clues offered. After receiving some clues, I did feel stupid, like I should have got that but so many of the puzzles were difficult. This room can get dark, and this time we came prepared with light up magnifying glass and reading glasses!
I think I liked this room better due to the mystery of what happened to Nana and the intricate challenges you had to solve. Unfortunately we did not escape this room. They always give you an option of knowing what you missed and both times we wanted to know. While we came very close this time - I think that last puzzle would have taken us another 20- 30 mins with clues, we never would have been able to solve it.
Pros: The staff is very friendly and helpful rooms are outfitted well and puzzles are definitely tricky
Cons: I wish they had bigger locks, some are small so it's hard to manipulate and see also for some of the locks it took a while to figure out where to line-up the keys in order to open it at another company's escape room , they watch you with a camera and will provide clues whenever you need help, through a mic. At Great Escape, you can ask for a hint on the iPad but sometimes the hints given were late and you already...
Read moreA couple of families we hang out with was looking for something different to do. Waterparks, BBQs, days at the park, watching a movie - all part of our portfolio of things to do during the summer. I've done several escape rooms with colleagues, you know the whole team building thing but for some reason, I've never done one with our kids and our friends. I did a search and there were some in Manhattan, some in Long Island, and Jersey. I ended up finding one in our neighborhood. Surprisingly, they had a lot of amazing reviews. Queens is known for its diversity, it's global food scene, but for Escape Rooms? I gave them a call and met Marilyn, the manager there. She answered all my questions and really sold all the different rooms they had in there. But our group went from 6 people to 8 people and on the day of, it turned to 10 people. I asked Marilyn if 10 people in a room would be too tight and she said she was going to be there an hour before opening and to come down to take a look. We ended up splitting our group into two different rooms and the kids and adults had a great time. It was the first time out of 5x that I failed to escape so I was a bit bummed but in my defense, I had five 10 year olds on my team arguing about who was going to open the lock and who was going to turn the door knob or push the buttons. Luckily, I had one of the moms in our group in our room too or else one or two of the kids might have never made it out of the room.
It was the first time for all the kids and all the adults and every single one of them asked, when are we coming back again. Marilyn was amazing, she really was amazing to work with and the staff was also great. We will be back soon but next time I will be sure to escape and redeem my family's honor.
Honestly, if we didn't have dinner reservations right after and they had another room open, I think we might have stayed for a second round. Let us order some drinks and a charcuterie board and we could easily hang out for a few rounds. Thanks for an entertaining and intellectually...
Read moreI absolutely loved this place! If you never been to an escape room , here is how it works: Basically your given a random scenario whether it being in a presidential suite or a murder mystery whatever it is your put at the center of it. You need to find clues which are usually hidden around the rooms you’re put in with a keen sense of observation and essentially solve riddles based on common sense, what you know about what’s going on and what needs to be known. Thats basically how this place works. You’re not allowed to film so this 10 second shaky clip was the best I could do but I promise you will not regret spending your money here. I do suggest you go with a partner or even a group to split costs but more so to actually escape because the further you advance the harder it gets but you only have an hour before you have to pay more for more time to actually solve the situation. I believe it’s $95 for 1 hour for a private room of up to 2 people but it maybe different because I went about 5 years ago with my buddy and just posting this review now. You also need to make a reservation but you have the opportunity to come back and solve the problem again should you pay the fee and the offer is valid up to...
