My generous score is based on the customer service of two young men who work in the pickup/ return section. Their friendliness and helpfulness should serve as an example for all of their co-workers.
With that being said: I'm the proud mama of a busy little nine-month old. Because of the pandemic, I try not to bring him inside enclosed public spaces much. So I do most of my shopping online and use curbside pickup as much as possible. However, on 12/9 I had a babysitter due to other appointments. While my time was limited, I had a few extra minutes to actually go into the store.
When I arrived I was happy to see that there were two separate lines for pick-ups and returns. Even better, there was only one person in front of me. I didn't know that the person in front of me would use the agent as their personal shopping assistant.
After waiting in line for about seven minutes and watching people go in and out of the return (it's usually the other way), I begged the pardon of the assistant but asked if I should get in the other line as it was moving faster. She looked aghast that I would ask her that question. Then, as if she wouldn't be bothered either way, she told me that I was next but that it was up to me if I switched lines and then went right back to doing what she was before. No apology that the process was taking longer than expected, not even a conciliatory tone. She never asked one of her associates for backup either.
I understand that the needs of each customer are important but that means all customers, not just those who want to look through there Macy's purchase history, look up online purchases because they didn't do so on their own, return an item so that they could get a percentage off and several other items that should have been directed to the other line, are more important.
I've managed a front desk or two. When the requests of one customer start to impact others, you can ask for additional help if available, ask the customer to step aside if possible, or at the very least, apologize. This agent chose to be dismissive, indifferent and unbothered that there were other customers waiting.
I was actually helped by one of the young men who saw the line growing and took it upon himself to assist the customers waiting in line. I would have waited for a store manager but after waiting for 10-12 to pick up my order (I could have purchased in person for less time), I had no more time to spare so that I could make it back for the babysitter.
For some reason, curbside pickup at this Macy's is quicker than going into the store. In the future, I am only going to use this option or take my business to Nordstrom which, interesting enough, is right...

Read morePurchased a watch online for pickup in store. I arrived to very poor customer service: one clerk was on her phone, she ignored my Hello and excuse me miss. She got off her phone to say ask this another clerk who was nowhere to be found. I walked to another location in the " fine jewelry " department and asked about pick up of a watch and this woman tried to sell me a Macy's credit card. I explained I'd just like to pick up my watch. She directed me to another location. I got there and approached two woman talking who seemed to ignore that I was a customer. Excuse me, I said. I'm here to pick up a watch I ordered online. One responded to give my ID. We walked over to another counter and she brought out my watch. The watch hardly looked new! There were finger pints and smudges on the face of it and the band. This was supposed to be brand new! I pointed out the defects and the clerk began to wipe the watch off; " see, it's better, no worries." She said. I looked over the watch again, it still looked used, the face was dirty still and the band was in fact smudged with what looked like oil markings. I asked for a refund. When I asked for the refund the clerk said that we should look.at another. I declined. This was supposed to be a present and a new watch should have been offered the first time instead of having me purchase what seemed like a used watch. Horrible experience and...
