On September 4th, I drove my mother from Woodstock, IL with the intent to purchase a couch and a coffee table. When we got there, we ended up working with Bonnie. She was super sweet, and I loved her eyewear. Unfortunately, we should have taken the advice of one of the other female employees (a brunette who was working in mattresses) and waited for a designer. My mom and I didn’t want to wait an hour for a designer. We wanted to get things moving. This was when we met Bonnie.
Again, nice lady. Before we worked with her, we went through a sea of what they call “swatches” and picked out a lovely tapestry pattern for our new couch. Bonnie seemed to know everything about putting a couch together. From the arm rests and hardware, to the kind of backrest options for the couch. We had everything measured out. Then it was time to find a new coffee table. By this time, my 77 year old mother was exhausted. She recently had her other knee replaced so it’s not easy to be on her feet. We were grateful to have a wheelchair provided for us so I could push her around the store. We had to browse the coffee tables and they were not all in one spot. We decided on a beautiful coffee table. All together, our custom sectional and coffee table was coming to just under $9000.00.
Bonnie took more than a few minutes to plug the order into her tablet. The couch was custom so she had to manually enter in everything. She had our bill ready and handed it to us for review. After about 2 hours of this experience, and being ready to hand her the credit card, it all went south. It turned out that there was only 27 yards of fabric for the tapestry selection we wanted for the couch. Bonnie called to find out if it would be enough, and it turned out it was not. The only reason she was able to find this out was when she went to order extra swatches of our fabric selections for the couch and throw pillows.
Now, I don’t know if Bonnie was trying to go out of her way to grab extra commission for a sale that a designer should have handled, or what. But both my mother and I felt like being in the furniture business, that this issue probably happens a lot. My mom and I would have saved a lot of time had she checked on the fabric availability first. We wouldn’t have had to wander the entire sales floor looking for a coffee table. At the least.
I know Bonnie is in sales, and she was only trying to save the sale, but her efforts to save the sale were a little rough around the edges. At first she wa alike, “Well, we will just have to choose another fabric!” Really? After all of the time we just spent matching everything?” I don’t think so, and I kept my mouth shut. Also: when we decided to leave, she said, “Oh, this is sad for me too! I just lost a sale!”
Bonnie may have lost a sale, but she broke my mom’s heart. That comment she made she should have kept to herself. Again, she’s a nice lady, and I know what she meant. I am in sales too. It can be awkward trying to find the right words to say when it hasn’t worked out. I gave Darvin an extra star for Bonnie’s overall sweet demeanor. However, I hope this was a learning experience for her. Going forward, I would definitely check on the fabric availability before you take up the customer’s time. Last, I recommend that anyone who reads this review, that they work with a designer should anything they want turn out to be...
Read moreUpdate 2: We received the dresser last Wednesday and it was in perfect condition. The delivery guys were very respectful as well. Just waiting on the rest of the set which we were aware it'd take longer. I did want to say, I wish I hadn't have had to post the bad review. I wish that the customer service guy I had talked with that Friday would have believed me and looked into the whole matter before writing it off and making my husband and I feel like we were lied to. Our salesman was a nice gentlemen.
Update: My husband just texted me saying Clinton called him and found the dresser. That another order had accidentally grabbed it but he was able to rectify the discrepancy and we should be getting it next week. I appreciate the Darvin rep reaching out to me here and for notifying Clinton/ the store of my review and our problem as the customer service guy I had called earlier couldn't help us. I can't wait for this set, it's absolutely stunning and we're very excited to have it. 💛 Thank you. (I'll update my review again when we get the piece!)
Original Review: Our salesman Clinton straight up lied to us about a 5-drawer chest being in stock. My husband and I came in on the 26th and purchased a bedroom set that Clinton told us we'd be able to have the chest piece delivered on Wednesday 9/29 as it was in stock in the backroom. Well here we on 10/1 and I just called customer service and was told that none of the furniture set is actually in the store and it never was. Looking at the receipt, it shows that the two nightstands were to be delivered on 9/29 and not the chest??? But those aren't in stock either and weren't delivered. This has left a seriously bad taste in my mouth of this store. Spending over $5k on furniture and then having no communication on what's going on, being lied to, and seemingly incompetent salesman is really not a good look. I understand furniture is taking forever to get to the stores but why not just say that when we were buying it? We were willing to wait until December for the rest of the set but our salesman said we'd get the chest on the 29th, we were expecting it to come on the 29th, and then nothing. 👎 Good thing we didn't buy our...
Read moreEdit: dropping down to one star. Very disappointing experience. We had a repair contractor sent out to evaluate the furniture and he said Darvin would follow up with us, which did not happen. The salesperson giving us false information about the warranty is a major bummer but I guess do what you have yo do to make a sale. Make sure you read the fine print and do not trust what you are told. The sectional is getting creakier by the day which is bad sign given the 1.5 year age and the table is showing so much wear it will need to be replaced soon.
Go somewhere cheaper and you will receive the same mediocre, at best, quality, possibly without the false information on warranty.
I'm giving this two stars solely based on the service we received from our salesperson who was very helpful.
The quality of the furniture is average at best and the prices do not seem to reflect that. We spent $3500+ and have had our sectional and small round kitchen table for about a year. The surface of the table scratches and comes off with routine cleaning after a meal. The couch is losing significant volume from the cushions and the creaks are getting worse and worse.
Beware that they warranty offered is not all that it is said to be. Our salesperson told us we could call/email as much as needed to have the furniture replaced when issues come up. We had called about the table as the surface had started to come off and it was promptly replaced. It happens continuously and we attempted to have it replaced again and were sent to an email blackhole by the warranty department so it seems it should be advertised as one replacement under warranty. We will need to replace the table soon and will definitely be going elsewhere. The couch will likely be transitioned to a basement couch for the kids and we will again be in the market. Very disappointing after a little over a...
