I feel so blessed and grateful that Top Buttons St. Pete donated a $75 voucher to me after Hurricane Helene flooded my apartment in St. Pete Beach. My husband and I lost so many of our things and wardrobe even though our apartment was not even on the beach but by the bay. We didn’t prepare the apartment for Helene because we never imagined that our apartment would be flooded as Helene did not hit St. Pete directly: it was actually 100 miles off the coast of St. Pete. However, because Helene was an immense super hurricane, the storm surge flood went up to the second cabinet of our dresser, so our shoes and wardrobe got flooded. I lost all my makeup and jewelry, and I only had one pair of jeans to wear and no sweaters, so I decided to look for help during this challenging time.
The process of receiving a clothing voucher donation from Top Buttons was easy (just email Top Button St. Pete): Sara was sweet, kind, and very generous with her time. Before I went, I researched Top Buttons and learned on their website that they are a nonprofit organization that has helped hundreds of girls (11-25 years of age) by giving them clothing, mentorship, and educational events to help them with jobs and to increase their self-worth.
When I walked into Top Buttons in the early afternoon, I was delighted with the ambiance and aesthetic of the store: it feels and looks as if you are shopping in a high-end designer boutique except when you look at the prices, you realize that these are thrift-store prices. For example, I found a knitted Anne Taylor sweater (that probably costs around 100 dollars in a retail store), but at Top Buttons, it was only $16 dollars! I got two jeans that fit me well, and I only paid 10 dollars (Old Navy) for one of them and 12 dollars (Indigo Rein) for the other one. I also found a cute yellow Express crop top for only $14 dollars. All of these items looked new without any marks or discoloration on them. Top Buttons St. Pete curates only the best gently-used items for the store. As there are so many cute and well-priced options in Top Buttons, it took me about two hours to make my final decision as to what I wanted to take home with me.
The last item I got was priced higher than the majority of the items in the store because it was a designer sweater from St. John. The prices of Top Buttons are very cheap, but there are a few racks with very high-end clothing. A brand-new sweater from St. John would cost more than $1,000 dollars in a Macy’s, but at Top Buttons, it was priced at only $42 dollars! The sweater was a bright orange color and brightened my day. It looked new or barely worn. I knew I had to get it because it was knitted, and those kind of sweaters take time to make. So when I got home, I found out how much a sweater like that would cost in a regular store as I wasn’t aware of that designer brand name: apparently, they make a lot of knitted clothing.
I couldn’t believe I had left with so many awesome clothing items. I’ve never seen a store like Top Buttons before. The time that Sara takes to curate the best designer thrift clothing items is valuable, and I highly recommend you stop by this amazing store because it’s absolutely worthy of your time as it has the highest quality thrift merchandise I’ve ever seen in a boutique.
Strong and empowered women like Sara helping girls is what our world needs. It’s important for women to be positive beacons of support to each other because it spreads empowerment. Girls need this help because they are living in a sexist culture, and having a strong female support system is important. I am proud to have shopped at Top Buttons, and I feel grateful that there is a place in our St. Pete community that is a haven for girls and women.
Please donate your gently-used clothing, your time, or your financial resources to help Sara continue her mission to help young girls build their self-worth at a time when they are most vulnerable: their teen and young-adult years. It’ll make you feel good to know your financial support or clothing is going to a...
