I'm a Salem resident and I am on a mission to tour all the local attractions AND historical sites.
About this one: The Gardner-Pingree House is property of the Peabody Essex Museum and open to the public only for guided tours. I visited it today as part of an architectural, walking tour (called "Brick by Brick") that I booked on the PEM website and includes other properties too.
This tour is very well designed, with a lot of information, a professional guide and it's easy to follow as we were all provided with a radio and earphones connected to the guide's microphone.
The Gardner-Pingree House is one of the large mansions built during the Golden Age of Salem, designed in Federal style by Samuel McIntyre for wealthy merchant John Gardner. This house is in amazing shape given it's age but it is built from brick and has a granite foundation. Furnished as it would have been when built, it was completely reworked in the 1980s.
