I started my walk at Van Ness Avenue and Bay Street (Buses 19, 30, 49 and 29) and walked along Van Ness Avenue towards the water. Eventually you will end at the trail that leads into Fort Mason and exit where Safeway is (about .5 walk semi flat trail). Along the walk, there are markers that provide historical information of what you see and where you are at. This walk gives you an entire view of Fort Mason and its surrounding areas. The walk was tranquil and peaceful - an easy walk. Views of Ghirardelli Square, Golden Gate Bridge, Aquatic Cove, Pier 4 (original Alcatraz pier), Alcatraz Island, Fort Mason Park, Community Garden, and Aquatic Park can be seen on this walk. I saw two statues: Madonna and Philp Burton in Fort Mason Park.
When you reach Safeway, turn right and you will be at Fort Mason Center (that is the aerial view you got from the walk). The Center doesn't have much except for the theatre and two restaurants. However, some buildings are occupied by businesses. Parking is not free - there are ticket machines to purchase a parking pass. Fort Mason Security (they work for the non-profit that manages this area) do patrol frequently so make sure you pay. Security tells me that that the parking lot isn't full even with...
Read moreI always have a great time at Fort Mason events. It’s pretty hard to find parking in this area, so definitely Uber or bus if you can instead. If you do Uber, remember to be dropped off at the front of Fort mason, since it’s hard to drive in or blocked off on event days. You should also be aware that most events are held at the Festival Pavilion, which is the back-most building on the right side, next to the water. Most of the buildings looks newer and painted, but the Festival Pavilion is only painted in the front (which is a little weird). Come on the weekend if you’re planning on visiting the lively Farmers Market! They have some food at the Farmer’s Market, but the wait is sometimes very long (30-45 mins) during peak hours. Great date spot if you visit an event there and then hang around nearby attractions afterwards....
Read moreWe went to Fort Mason for the Renegade Craft Fair. So this review caters to that event.
Hipster craft fair with food trucks, craft brewers coffee to kombucha, 100's of stalls with bags, clothing, candles, art work, and even a Ford Mustang booth where you can design your own mustang magnet.
Slightly pricey, however most stalls offered to take a credit card.
Parking was a nightmare, but a couple passes around the block next door (Marina) yielded free parking, ironically the paid parking right inside fort mason was full.
I am not sure why this is called Renegade. I didn't see signs of rebellion but hipstery awesomeness.
Grab some macaroons, try some food truck fare, buy items for your body, beauty, house and hobby. While you are at Fort Mason don't forget to visit the amazing Mexican Art...
