Love it, absolutely love Off the Grid. The entire concept, everything.
Really Liked * -Aburaya Japanese Fried Chicken - Ordered the 4 piece fried chicken, half with the Aburaya BBQ sauce, and other half with the Japenese Curry dry rub (costs $1 more to split flavors). The BBQ flavor was amazing, the Curry one, not so much, but still so juice and tender. I believe they use chicken thighs and that's how they get their chicken to be so moist and flavorful. You can also ask for rice and greens for extra, but well worth it! It's a lot of food! -Revenge Pies - Ordered the Apple Pie and it was solid. Cinnamony flavored and the apples were cooked perfectly. The crust was bomb as well! A perfectly executed apple pie, and they also put some whipped cream on top as well!
Did Not Really Enjoy * -El Porteño Empanadas - Was expecting a juicy beefy taco pocket style empanada but did not get that. The beef one was a bit dry and had too many miscellaneous veggies inside and didn't really taste that hearty to me. The chimichurri sauce was a tad bit too oily as well. -This one Argentina BBQ Skewer place (totally forgot the name) - The skewers were salty af...they ran out of flavors (it was barely 8pm... and the chicken was super dry as well, totally nuked out overcooked...wish I remembered the name...total disappointment!
Off the Grid happens every Friday during the non-winter months from 5:00p-10:00p. A MUST try!! They also serve alcoholic drinks!! Beers, wines, cocktails, well...
Read moreMy favorite Off The Grid Location at Fort Mason every Friday! It's a smorgasbord of food trucks with food, drinks, and dessert! OTG is a must go, but especially at Fort Mason because there are over 30 trucks that gather at this location. You can get lots of Asian food along with Mexican, American, BBQ, and more.
It's great to come with a bunch of friends so everyone can buy food from a different truck and share, so you can get a sampling of the many foods that is offered. I tried many of the food trucks and they were excellent. My favorite is Bombzies BBQ! They serve chicken kebabs served with rice or on a baguette. I love the Korean Chicken Kebab with Rice! The chicken is tender, the sauce is delicious, and the portion is generous. The Chairman truck serves buns sandwiched with meat and veggies. The steamed bun with tender pork belly is the best. The pork belly is melt in your mouth and flavorful. It's always a crowd pleaser as there is a guaranteed queue. Koja Kitchen is also delicious. Koja is a Japanese Korean fusion known for it's crispy rice patties. The combo is the best as you get a tasting of the koja with a choice of meat, I usually get the short ribs which are so tender and tasty, along with their fries. The ArKi truck I think has the best fried chicken in SF! The Vietnamese food served by The Green Cyclo is also very good. The food is fresh and the iced tea is so good!
OTG is definitely a must! If you're visiting the city, this...
Read moreWhat fun! I hadn't been to an Off the Grid event in a long time. I wanted to avoid the crowds and long lines. I went to OtG at 5:30 on a Friday to find a healthy, but not overwhelming number of people. Half an hour later, there were lines at some of the more popular places like Senior Sisig, but plenty of other tasty trucks where you could walk up and order. I went to Jackrabbit and got some very tasty veggie sliders and cheddar scallion tater tots. You can also buy a VIP pass for $25 that gets you four tastes from marked stands.
Fort Mason's OtG has fire pits, live music/ djs, and themed nights. Last Friday's theme was Dog Days of Summer and featured dog training advice, a pet food vendor, and Moose the bulldog. I had a perma-smile from all of the dogs and kids. I don't know if the canine influx had anything to do with the night's theme, or if that's normal. I guess I'll have to go back to find out!
One last piece of advice: be sure to wander to the edge of Fort Mason (behind the largest buildings) to view the most incredible sunsets over the Golden Gate Bridge. You can...
