Read moreThe Sea Lion Viewing Area at Pier 39 is one of San Francisco’s most unique and entertaining free attractions—and yes, it’s absolutely worth a visit.
While the surrounding Pier 39 area is often labeled a tourist trap due to its crowded walkways, overpriced eateries, and souvenir-heavy shops , the sea lions are the genuine article. They began arriving after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, and by early 1990, their numbers had grown significantly. Rather than evict them, the marina embraced their presence, relocating boats to give the sea lions full access to the docks. Since then, these wild animals have chosen to stay, drawn by the safety of the floating docks and the abundant food supply in the bay .
The viewing area is open-air and free to access. Visitors can watch the sea lions lounge, bark, and play from just a few feet away. The experience is both amusing and educational, especially with the nearby Sea Lion Center offering insights into their behavior and conservation . Plus, the backdrop of the bay, Alcatraz, and the Golden Gate Bridge adds to the charm.
In summary, while Pier 39 has its touristy elements, the Sea Lion Viewing Area stands out as a delightful and authentic experience that...
Read moreWatching the sea lions from here was one of my favorite parts of my trip to San Francisco. We were here for about a week and I think we stopped here to see them about six times - sometimes multiple times a day. It just doesn't get old. They're so playful and interesting to watch. The way they interact with each other and the barking they do is probably the best part. On our last visit, one sea lion decided to leap out of the water up on to a pallet that was already full of other sea lions. All the others on the pallet - who had been laying down and resting or snoozing - simultaneously snapped their heads up and started barking at the newcomer. Of course, the newcomer didn't seem to care - he just settled down into the group. It was hilarious! Whenever you visit Pier 39, make time to watch these sea lions, even if only for a few minutes. You won't be disappointed. (One word of caution - the authorities have posted signs about not feeding the sea lions or harassing them in any way. They're serious about this and thankfully, everyone respected it as far as I could see. After all, these are wild animals and leaving them alone is the best way to ensure everyone can enjoy...
