The old version of the civic center was a strong 5 stars, probably the best park I have ever visited. After the renovations and "improvements", it is down at 3 or 3.5 stars. I grew up in this park. On the weekends my parents would pile us 5 kiddos into the large van and bring us to the park to listen to music. My older brother and I would buy a pack of mini playing cards and dice at the close by Mexican Imports store and find a hidden spot to pretend to know how to play poker and craps. "Come on lucky 7's" you could hear us yelling. There were endless fountains, a lily pad and minnow filled pond, ducks, and expansive gardens with snapdragon flowers. The original developers had the imagination of a child. The place defied space, time, and reality. A mere few blocks of park seemed endless with all of its hidden nooks and crannies. Huge shade trees to climb and nap under. Soft cool grass to roll around in. Fountains to toss a coin into (or collect coins if you were a little boy willing to gamble with the Gods over wish stealing). As I said, the place was magical. Then the "improvements" came. Grassy knolls became barren fields of crushed rock and cactus. The snapdragon gardens disappeared. The ducks left. The hidden spaces were taken away. The checkerboard playng area disappeared. The meandering red brick path and hills on the west end were removed, and straight flat concrete sidewalks were installed. The infinite park took on a finite feeling. I can't express how bummed I am about the loss of such a special place and the inability to share the spot with my three boys. Is the new park "bad"? No. There are still two grassy areas for concerts and some pretty trees, but it is nothing compared to how it used to be. I get the need to conserve water in the valley, but I thought that was the whole point of the park. An oasis of water, grass, shade, and magic for the whole community in a place where water was too scarce to create the same environment in each of their own backyards. I just hope the new park grows on me. Seriously though, who thought switching out grass and flowers for fields of, and containers filled with 4 inch pieces of crushed rock was a good idea? We have so many beautiful natural desert spots in the valley that this place should have stayed as the green oasis it was....

Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts
