After much consideration, I’ve come to the conclusion that writing a review is an inherently subjective act. What can I say objectively that offers any value to an audience?
This is a rock. It is on the beach. The beach adjoins the ocean.
How is this information helpful to someone who, I presume, is only reading this review because it appeared as a Google search result of Haystack Rock, and who has, at this point, likely seen numerous photos depicting exactly what I’ve just described? So, it’s clear to me that the true value of a review lies in my subjective experience of the rock, and the reader’s ability to relate to that experience. This final point is important because it grants validity to the review.
For example, I read many reviews awarding very few stars because the sky was overcast and the weather was windy. But I like it overcast and windy. That’s why I chose to vacation in Oregon and not California. Unfortunately, the weekend of my visit boasted clear and sunny skies. There are two problems with these types of reviews: 1) the reviewers’ preferences did not align with my own, and 2) the reviewers’ experiences did not align with my own.
Additionally, too many of these reviews focus on places that are not Haystack Rock. Cannon Beach, Tolovana Inn, Mo’s. These are all places that deserve their own reviews. I find it discouraging that Haystack Rock received one star because a nearby restaurant makes clam chowder that tastes like potato soup.
So, I’ve taken it upon myself to share what I feel is a relatable experience. Something that informs you what to expect when visiting Haystack Rock, and maybe even sways your decision whether to go at all. And yes, I’ll review those other nearby places separately.
During my stay in Cannon Beach, I could almost always see Haystack Rock from a distance. I ventured close to it exactly twice. What follows reflects my purely subjective experience.
For those who enjoy early mornings and beach runs, I recommend planning your vacation around a low tide that occurs before sunrise. At 5 a.m., the beach is empty, and you can have the rock to yourself. I don’t say this as an excuse to ignore the posted rules regarding the rock and its surrounding tidepools; rather, to suggest a more pleasant experience. Because during the day, low tide draws crowds. And official-looking volunteers, generously donating their time, may try to corner you into conversations about puffins.
I enjoyed my early morning run to the rock. I also enjoyed my more traditional tourist visit, although the crowds took away much of its peacefulness. What more needs to be said? That was my experience. Perhaps it will be yours, too.
Of all the rocks I have ever seen, Haystack Rock is definitely one of them. Five stars in the early morning. Otherwise,...
Read moreHaystack Rock was one of the locations on my bucket list. We made the journey here and it didn’t disappoint. As we reached the rock, we were amazed by its sheer beauty. The surrounding beauty of Haystack Rock absolutely cannot be matched. We visited around noon on the first weekend in October, and the weather was perfect. We were lucky to have blue skies with a few clouds when we arrived. It was a little nippy out, around 45 degrees, but the wind wasn’t blowing so it wasn’t bad at all. There were roughly 10-15 people on the beach when we arrived which was nice for some great photos. Around 1:30pm a lot of people started to show up on the beach to walk dogs, fly kites, run on the beach, and just enjoy the surroundings. We spent about two hours here walking up and down the beach near Haystack, looking at wildlife, picking up seashells and rocks, and enjoying the amazing view. There were tons of jellyfish on the shore, some were completely intact. We were sad they didn’t survive, but found it interesting to see them up close. The beach houses off of the shore had a natural look, they added a rustic charm to the beach and didn’t take away from the feel of the environment.
If you are not planning on staying at Cannon Beach overnight, I highly recommend wearing some warm clothes, a hat, and some gloves. Also, bring a change of socks and shoes with you. We didn’t intend to get wet, but while taking some photos close to the rock, the water snuck up on us and soaked our shoes. We had to drive back to Portland with wet feet.
There truly is endless beauty in America. Haystack Rock and Cannon Beach is a mystical place that will make you wonder where the heck you are. I highly recommend you plan a visit. We never know how long these natural treasures...
