Completely Ripped Me Off. Sold me a "hand made" in Idaho Teton 12 String , he said. $500 was a steal for handmade. When I got home a few weeks later I noticed the tag inside, Made in China. Stupid of me not to check, I know. But, the barber in Seaside, who I think gets a cut, no pun intended, was really adamant about me visiting Michael's Music. Not a great selection and the shop looks horrible, things lackadaisical about the room as if someone is moving out any day. The owner, Michael, and sole employee is very pushy. While I was able to be dense enough to not inspect the guitar more closely and research online, I was with enough cognitive capacity to resist his charming and continued pressure of guitar lessons, even though I have been playing for some time, and even more though I live three hours away. He said I could just make a day of each of the 25 lessons I should buy. Anyway, I am sure him and the seaside barber had a good laugh at me. Don't be foolish. Michael's is shady, and not to be trusted. The guitar I purchased for 500 can be easily bought for half that at online retailers. The closet I could find in high price is the one pictured below, at 350.00 however this model can be found for even less still. That's a shame. I am one to support independent shops whenever possible, even if it's paying a little extra, but for over 200 bucks? Bummer.
In short; Michael's Music is either a con artist or a desperate business owner. Either way, it's best to avoid this "quaint" coastal shop. Oh and that...
Read moreWe came across Mikes Guitars on a trip to Oregon and thought we would stop in and check out the store, oh what a mistake that was. We were in the store for no less than 10 when we were harassed and booted out. I have been in countless guitar stores in my time and have never been treated so poorly as a customer. We were not being loud, rough or disrespectful in any perceivable manor when we were told that “we need to show some respect.” I can understand wanting people to purchase your wares as an owner of a store but kicking out customers for nothing more than playing the instruments on display is an abysmal business strategy and a great way to ensure people never set foot near your guitar store again. This was without a doubt the worst experience I have had as a customer ever. You couldn’t pay me to set foot in that store again. I’d give this store zero stars if I could. 0/10 would...
Read moreI went into Michaels because I was curious about mandolins. Michael knew his instruments and was able to explain the similarities between mandolins and violins and demonstrate to me the difference in resonance between a starter instrument that was made of resin and a slightly more expensive instrument made of wood. Like other reviewers have mentioned, he offered me lessons and a ~10% "discount" (none of the instruments in the store, as far as I could tell, had price tags), but he did not pressure me into taking lessons or buying anything. He offered me a pick and a seat and said I could play as long as I wanted. By the end of my visit, I felt informed enough about mandolins and comfortable with the one he suggested to buy it. Two weeks later, I am still very happy with my purchase. If I lived closer to Cannon Beach, I might even take him up on...
