We've had the beach bikes on our "bucket list" for a while, so we'd planned in advance to be there when it opens to enjoy a longer ride with the bikes. They are open based on the tides - which is clearly important! So that was great to read on their FB page. Each day changes with time - due to the tide, so be aware and plan accordingly.
We went on a Thursday, hoping to avoid major crowds - while it was very crowded in the town we arrived at opening time and were able to get in and out very quickly.
We arrived at the store, my son went ahead while I parked. There is a public parking directly across from the store which is an amazing find - just be sure you get there early enough to get a spot.
I was concerned it would be a long line with the new COVID restrictions and 1 person at a time in the store. However they were very fast and very efficient.
They provided simple but precise instruction, clear in their communication on how to use the bikes and explaining everything to look out for on the beach. Ensured my taller son had a bike that fit him - it did and it was perfect. I had a beach bag that I wanted to take but there is no place to put it, they offered a back pack which was a huge help and bonus - talk about customer service support. The back pack saved me as was easy to place on my front so I had provisions for the kiddos.
We rented the recumbent beach bikes, you have to carry them to the beach but it's super easy. Just follow their instructions. It will take a few minutes to get a handle on how to move your body with the bike - there is no hand steering, it's all through you body which is a great core workout :-) I think it's a fantastic experience for the young and old. The bikes we had were well oiled in and good functioning order, we had no issues with the bikes although my younger child was tired before we made it to the end of Cannon Beach so it took a while getting back. If you are taking it to enjoy the tide pools it's an easy there and back. My 11 year old got tired a bit earlier than my older son and I. They do have kids carrier attachments which is awesome if kiddos are younger. But I think if you make it an easy ride, an enthusiastic younger child could manage the beach bike a short distance. I'd plan for extra reinforcements like cool drinks and something to sustain a 1 1/2 to 2 hour ride and adventure on the beach.
Since it was a good sunny day - sunscreen and hats are best.
Prices were completely reasonable and totally worth it - ours was $20 for 90 minutes with some grace period to get to and from the beach. They were excellent all around. I'd highly recommend this and we will absolutely...
Read moreI did this activity as a kid and I was excited to bring my own kids to try it out. We came in to have our kids fitted since some of them are small for their age and we weren’t sure there would be anything their size, but the banana peel bikes come in Mini! Steve let us know when low tide would be the next day, so we returned the next afternoon. My friend and I rented fat tire bikes (easier on the knees, same price!). After a few minutes for the kids to figure out how to turn and brake, we were off on a grand beach adventure! What a great family memory. I did have to stop quite often to give my 7yo a push, because she had a hard time getting the bike to move after it stopped in the sand and sank a little, but the rest of the kids didn’t have this issue. One of the other small ones pooped out after about an hour. My bike had a rusty pedal but everyone else’s worked great. We will all sleep well tonight! Thanks for the...
Read moreWhat an amazing local business! The owner Ian is super friendly, the bikes are really well maintained and the service is fantastic. We first requested to rent for an hour (normally they recommend 90 mins), and took the bikes to the beach. Soon, we were having so much fun that an hour turned into 90 mins and even two hours. Ian was extremely accommodating and extended our reservation. Even though we came back after 2 hours, he didn't overcharge us. Their friendliness and hospitality made our rides unforgettable. Highly recommend renting beach bikes from here. Make sure you check out the tide clock - Ian has it hanging in the shop. They also sell bikes and accessories and they are favorite shop...
