Mode Gym — Attraction in West Chicago Township

Since this gym is relatively new, it seems the bad reviews haven’t started coming in yet, so let me be first. I wanted to give these guys a benefit of the doubt, but behind big smiles, hides another story. Having been a member of gyms as high-fi as Equinox as well as basic gyms like planet fitness, I feel my opinion has some merit and range of what or how a gym should operate.

The gym is an ostentatious attempt to be a high profile gym, but even if you paint everything black and gold, the place where any and all gyms like these lack is customer service. The “group” class room seems more to be this poorly (not dimly and smart) lit closet tucked away to cater to anyone who needs classes. But if and when you see the room, you will understand why this gym doesn’t cater to the group class crowd. In my first months of membership their were issues with the bathrooms and the steam room. It’s a brand new gym - fix it.

It seems that there are two things that make this gym a 1 star gym for me. The first thing that put me off to it was the fact that they kept hounding my wife with calls after calls about coming in for showing some interest in personal training - to the point that they made an excuse that she “dropped” her gym card in the locker room. That would be fine and all, but they said this when she had never even visited or used the facilities up to that point. Seems like a desperate attempt by the PT staff to make money.

The biggest issue came toward cancelling my short membership with them. After informing them I want to cancel my membership, one month later I get charged again. I also find out they increased their cancellation policy from 30 days to 60 days. This mentality of having to increase such a policy is a sure sign that the gym needs money and need to gouge their clients in every way (they were probably getting so many cancellations that they wanted to take 2 months from their clients instead of just 1, otherwise why do it). After a back and forth with their “general manager” Sebastian who apparently is only manager by name because has no authority to refund or do anything on his own, they decided not to refund my duplicate charge after already cancelling membership. Once again, if they weren’t in need of the money, where is the customer service? Even equinox will work with you and figure something out. These guys are just a sham and clearly don’t know how to run a business.

This place has managed to embody every single aspect of a nightmarish customer service experience one could imagine. The gym itself has decent equipment, but that's where the positives end. The space is so small, and it's constantly overcrowded.

However, the absolute worst part of my Mode Gym nightmare is their cancellation process. I emailed Mode in April 2023 to cancel my membership and they gave me a phone number to ABC Gym, a third party they use. I called them multiple times and each time I get disconnected! I finally found their email and after submitting the paperwork I received confirmation of my cancellation on 8/7/23. That should have been the end of it, right? Wrong! They informed me that my membership would be canceled with an effective date set two months ahead. Fine, I thought, I'll just wait it out. But here we are, in January 2024, and I am STILL being charged!

The sheer incompetence and complete disregard for their customers is mind-boggling. I've wasted countless hours on hold, writing emails, and dealing with their excuses. This gym has not only been a financial drain but also a source of immense stress and frustration. It's beyond infuriating that they continue to charge me months after I requested to cancel my membership.
