Due to a class assignment, it was our first time visiting Rollins Museum of Art with my boys. My boys and I went separate ways to view the museum. I was impressed with the diversity of art the museum provided. Meeting up with the boys, I noticed the security guy was following them for a while and then I was being followed. Upon walking out of the museum, the security guy followed used and watched us from the window as if we had stolen something. We stood in front of the door to take a picture that was required with the assignment and of course he was still watching us even though we were already outside the building. As a parent it made me feel very uncomfortable. Not only for me but for my boys as well. It's said to say that we were being followed because of the color of our skin. If Rollins Museum of Art has an issue with colored/bi-racial people visiting their museum then post a sign on your website and at the door that we will be followed at all times or colored/bi-racial people are not allowed. I wanted to confront the security guy but realizing that I would have created a scene and the issue would not be resolved. Instead I rather voice my opinion in this review. The 2 star provided was for the front desk women who was super sweet when we...
Read moreWe walked around the lovely campus of Rollins College after riding the Sunrail from Debary, FL. We went to the history museum first after exiting off the Sunrail and learned where the Rollins Art Museum was. Then we strolled down to Rollins after shopping and eating lunch and found the Art Museum situated among live oaks near a lake. It located in an easy to find place with limited parking nearby. We are glad we walked and didn't have to bother with parking. It is an easy walk from the train station. The Museum is free and we visitied during the week and we were the only two people in the museum. It is small but, the displays were interesting and educational, the staff was friendly and welcoming. They even had hands on art area for children which I thought was a nice way to teach children about art. The building is lovely and situated among large oak trees near a lake. We walked behind the museum and around the lake and enjoyed the view. It is a very peaceful and pleasant atmosphere. The bathrooms are clean and going to an art museum in the summer is a great activity as it is air conditioned and cool. A great escape from the heat. I enjoyed the art exhibit on women and masks and found it thought provoking and...
Read moreJust to let folks know because both the website and the hours posted show that the museum is open, that this is not true. We wondered whether the sign on the door itself saying that the museum was closed until May 20th was incorrect as two other families were also expecting the museum to be open and were trying to get in. I called the museum and got a recording instructing callers to go to the website to learn the hours of operation. Oh, and if it does indeed open on the 20th of May, it is supposedly going to be from 5:30 to 7:30 so don't go in the daytime. I can't vouch one way or the other as to the quality of the artwork, but please don't make a special trip like we have done twice now since last week we had a medical emergency two blocks from the museum so we didn't get there so it is possible that it was closed last week as well with no way to know other than to show up there. If you're on the campus anyway, try your luck getting in. Otherwise, skip this and spend the time at Morse. Museum or Orlando...
