Read moreWriting our experience here to ensure no other guest has to deal with a €450 fine for taking a hot shower in winter.
One of our group had taken a hot shower in the morning - for not even 2 minutes - which somehow triggered the fire alarm in the room. It seemed like there was no urgency for any hotel staff to come, so we called reception, after which a staff member came to check - shortly after the fire brigade had to come to turn the alarm off.
Note that the shower is open at the top, and there is no functional exhaust. There is also no door for privacy if you want to step out of the shower if you're staying with others. The shower also faces a window with curtain, so if you were to open the curtain/window, guests on the other wing can see you naked. Perhaps it is a restored building and there's restrictions to certain design elements, but it has clearly not been thought out very well. I'd say it's a major design failure.
The general manager told us that we would have to pay €450 for the fire brigade. How would we have known that a 2-minute hot shower would cause the fire alarm to go off? There are no warning and signs in the bathroom saying so. The manager said something in the lines of "It has never happened before, nobody takes a hot shower in the morning here, you took an excessively long shower". The shower was, again, less than 2 minutes long and our friend had barely got his hair wet before the alarm went off.
Another issue we faced is that one of the rooms, that my 76 year old father stayed in, had a big step at the entrance to the bed. He tripped and fell and had a minor injury. My mother also tripped. If you have older guests, please consider getting a room without the step if you really want to stay here.
Thankfully our travel agent had settled the fire brigade issue for us, but the experiences we had here was a mood ruiner. Breakfast spread was not that great either. The only pro for this hotel is that it's somewhat conveniently located, 10-15min walk to the shopping street of Mozart's birthplace and almost directly in front of Mirabell Gardens.
I would recommend this hotel for young-and-able, voyeurism-enthusiastic and cold-shower-taking guests. Hyperion Salzburg does not deserve to be called a 5-star hotel for its hostility and...
Read moreAn absolutely wonderful hotel; some remarks on Junior Suites:
A work of art: ultra-modern sophistication within an impressive historical building. Well situated close to all touristic sites and facing congress hall and Mirabell gardens. Amazingly friendly front desk staff. We had access to the Club which had a decent variety of offerings for a continental breakfast, pastries throughout the day, soft drinks, wine, and beer.
For travelers booking a Junior Suite, it is good to know that there is no division between rooms as one would generally understand a suite to be. Wikipedia states: ”A suite in a hotel or other public accommodation (e.g. a cruise ship) denotes, according to most dictionary definitions, connected rooms under one room number. Hotels may refer to suites as a class of accommodations with more space than a typical hotel room, but technically speaking there should be more than one room to constitute a true suite.” Now a couple of things to be aware of: in the zeal for minimalism many new hotels often sacrifice function to form and here are some examples.
The bathroom has a glass window from which anyone in the room can watch the occupant, albeit with a light switch to make that window “opaque”! For heaven’s sake, what is the need for this?
The Junior suite has a “sofa right under the TV, with its back to the TV”: how can one watch tv except from the bed (see picture)?
There is not a single drawer (not 1) in the room not even in the desk! (see picture). You have to ask for luggage racks to at least ensure you don’t bend down each time you take something out of your suitcase. I guess if you are a light traveler with a carry-on or a backpack that last point would not bother you; but for a couple coming from abroad?
Finally, the toilet is separate from the bathroom and has no sink; meaning you have to move to the bathroom to wash your hands, hoping no one is showering.
These are small inconveniences that do not take away from the extreme charm of this hotel and that could be cured by inverting the beds and sofa locations, adding some drawers, and supplying each room with a luggage rack stored in the single available closet.
Would I stay there again: “””””most...
