I spent a long birthday weekend at Castillo Rojo that was absolutely perfect. It started on Friday morning when I arrived after an overnight flight - around 9am. It was way too early to check-in, but they were very helpful and kind and were able to take all my bags and securely store them. They also offered me water and showed me to the main floor bathroom where I could freshen up and apply sunblock to explore the city a bit. When I returned around 3pm, the room was ready. They very kindly helped with my heavy bags up the stairs to the top floor, and ensured that I didn't need anything else before settling in to the room.
The room was very nice - huge by my standards. I had the top floor, and I absolutely LOVED it. It was so quiet, and the bed was incredibly comfortable. I slept like a rock every single night I stayed here. The bathroom was also immaculate, with great water pressure in the shower and plenty of hot water.
At 5pm is a wine happy hour, and it was a lot of fun! You get to try a red and white wine in the very lovely common living area on the second floor. There I got to meet and chat with fellow guests and talk about our travels. The space is so elegant I really loved just spending time and relaxing here when I wasn't in the room. They also made available coffee and hot water for tea at all hours.
Breakfast is also provided every morning, and the spread is VERY good, plus scrambled eggs made to order. Service in the bistro where breakfast is served was stellar - the waiter was so kind and friendly, and we chatted quite a bit during my stay. On that note, EVERYONE who works here is extremely friendly and multi-lingual. I really enjoyed chatting with them about their experiences and time at the hotel.
When the big birthday came, it started with a surprise birthday ice cream at breakfast by the waiters in the bistro. I was thrilled and it was a marvelous start to the day! THEN, they surprised me with a charcuterie board and bottle of sparkling wine in my room when I came in from a morning visiting the Torre Costanera. I was moved to tears, as it has been a very difficult year (I lost my fiance last year) and to have such caring staff who not only remembered my birthday, and did something special to commemorate it, was very special to me. I will never forget their kindness and empathy during my stay.
The hotel is in a hip neighborhood in Santiago, and I never felt unsafe. Tons of restaurant and bar selections abound, with the closet restaurant right across the street if you wish for some quick take-out or an easy sit-down meal. They hotel also has an enclosed courtyard by the entrance where I enjoyed passing my evenings with my glass of sparking wine. My only regret is that I did not stay longer here.
Overall, there is so much more I wish I could say to persuade those who are reading this to choose this hotel. It was such a unique and marvelous experience that I will, without a doubt, return someday. If you are going to be in Santiago, even for just a couple days, I recommend you make this your lodging choice. I couldn't be happier, and I look forward to...
Read moreI had an overnight at Castillo Rojo for my first night in Chile. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and they responded quickly to my last-minute emails about transfer service, and were able to provide a very good and reasonably priced pickup from the airport. Despite arriving early in the day, they were very accommodating in getting me to a room (although they also had luggage storage if the room hadn't been ready yet), which was very welcome after the long flight. The room was nicely appointed, with the caveat that it is a retrofit from a residential home, so there are some work-arounds that have to be allowed for. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. They had a very nice early evening wine gathering on the second floor which allowed guests to mingle if interested. The location of the hotel is PERFECT for visiting local sites. It is close to Pablo Neruda's house, the Funicular, and many other Bellavista sites--all easy walks. The neighborhood IS noisy as noted by many others, but that is the trade-off for staying in the middle of the action. Unfortunately, the sound-proofing is a little lacking at the hotel and that is really the only downside of the hotel that I experienced. It was expected going in though due to other reviews, so it wasn't such a big deal for me. The hotel itself is interesting due to its history and architecture, and there is a nice plaza right out in front. I'd stay there again on a return trip, especially for the great location...
Read moreI stayed at Castillo Rojo for two nights with my family after an amazing trip in Chile. We arrived late at night after 12 hours on the road just wanting to take a shower and go to bed. The room was tiny (could only open a single carry-on in the room) and so was the shower. It looked like the bedsheet had not been changed after the previous guests left as I noticed hairs and stains on the sheet. Since it was late at night we waited for the next morning to ask the reception to send someone to fix our room and change the bedsheets. When we returned later the next day nobody took care of anything! We called the reception and asked to send someone to clean our room, the receptionist informed us that they didn’t have any cleaners currently in the hotel and there is nothing to do about it. When we went to complain about the whole thing the receptionist was extremely rude, rolled her eyes frequently and said that there is nothing to do about it but to write a negative review. We asked to speak to the manager and she said that she was not allowed to provide us with his phone number. It is important to note that the hotel is locked at all time and the gate is surrounded by electric cables. We came back from dinner one night and had to wait for 10 minutes in front of the gate. In addition, the breakfast was absolutely terrible. We ordered the avocado toast and one of us got bread with blue mold! Overall I would definitely not recommend this place. I’m sure that there are better hotels...
