First let me say that we have only good things to say about the hotel staff! From reception to housekeeping and breakfast servers everyone was hardworking, friendly and helpful! The hotel itself is very clean, and linens are fresh and crisp with wonderful pillows! There is turndown service @ 9pm with little cookies or candies placed on your pillows! Plus we were greeted on arrival by a personal note and bottle of champagne to welcome us! Breakfast was varied with lovely fresh mini croissants and other pastries, assorted cereals, fresh fruits, Spanish ham and other cold cuts and cheeses, scrambled or hard boiled eggs and sausages. Coffee was delicious and fresh squeezed juices were also available. Location is one of the main reasons we chose this hotel. It is steps away from a bus stop, the metro and RER is just a block away and Notre Dame and Saint Chappelle are also just a couple of blocks away, right across the river! In addition, there are cafes, brasseries, restaurants of many kinds, and shopping just outside the hotel. Ok now for the downsides of this hotel. Air conditioning was not working, and even though the outside temp was cool, it could get stuffy in the room, but opening the floor to ceiling windows wasn't always a good option since street noise was very loud, plus one of our windows was in the bathroom and would provide a full view of anyone in the shower or on the toilet if open 🤭. When we asked about the AC they provided us with a fan 🤷 which was ok ...but not really a good substitute for AC. In the bathroom the tub had a partial glass partition but it didn't stay in one place so water from the shower often went onto the floor 😒. Then there was the elevator 😳. It fit one person fine and you were allowed to have your spouse in it as well if you were a couple but that made it a bit tight and I don't like elevators on a good day so my husband and I generally took turns going up ...or we walked up the spiral staircase that wrapped around the elevator 💁. Anyway, from the photos online I expected a more modern hotel...though it clearly isn't in a modern building. Just be aware if you choose this hotel that there are still some early 19th century features like the outer windows of your room, although the inside windows are more modern. I do think I expected more for the price of our...
Read moreFirst off, this is definitely not a 4 star hotel, at least by U.S. standards. I stay in about 50 hotels a year, and I'd say this is maybe a 3 star hotel. I'm not saying this to bash the hotel because it is nice and I'd stay again, but it is misleading to describe this as a 4 star hotel.
First off, the staff is very friendly and nice. They let us check in 2 hours early, which they didn't have to do. The rooms are small. If you're a frequent European traveler this is not unexpected. The rooms are a bit dated with older wood furniture, dim yellow room lighting, bathroom showers with that stupid half door that makes it nearly impossible to take a shower without soaking the bathroom floor, and old-ish fixtures, but the room was very clean. It had fresh carpet, bed coverings, and curtains. There was a large, modern flat screen TV. There was a small dorm sized refrigerator in the room along with a small safe. So it was a mix of older and newer.
Be advised- the elevator is extremely small. Maybe enough room for one person only- certainly not with their luggage. Send your luggage up the elevator and meet it by walking up the stairs. Try to get a lower room if you don't want to deal with stairs.
The location is great. You're maybe a few hundred feet from a Metro station that connects via underground tunnels to the RER lines B&C. It's an easy hotel to get to if you're coming from CDG airport. Just hop on the RER B and take it to Notre Dame. You're also right near the Latin district, which has shopping and inexpensive restaurants of every type you could possibly want. It's a bit noisy at night if you sleep with the windows open, but you're in a big city, near the active Latin district, and the noise comes with the territory.
The front hotel door locks at around 11pm. Although the front desk faces the door, it appears that it is not directly staffed at the later hours. The night employee sleeps in an adjacent room. There is a doorbell cam you have to ring to get in. Hopefully it wakes him up. It took them about 2-3 minutes to let me in...
Read moreThis was my first stop in Europe after a long flight. The care I received from the staff here was beyond my expectations! I ended up extremely sick my first 2 days in Paris and Johan got me medicine from the pharmacy, along with crackers and tea. Upon my departure, Manuel was extremely friendly and helpful. We joked and talked while waiting for my taxi to the airport, and he even carried my heavy backpack to the taxi for me. The staff here went above and beyond and I can't wait to stay here again in the future!!
I've seen reviews complaining about the noise outside or about the stairs/elevator within the hotel. I was on the 6th floor and could hear people partying outside, but it wasn't something so loud that it couldn't be drowned out by the sound of the TV. Bring earplugs if you're a light sleeper or stay in a less busy area. This area is known for its restaurants and nightlife, so it's to be expected. As for the stairs/elevator: yes the elevator is a one person lift, but it works great! The stairs got me a little dizzy, but they're manageable. Most of the showers in Europe have the half door (from what I've seen), so it's all about adjusting your shower technique so you don't soak the floor. Please keep in mind, hotels in North America are entirely different than hotels in Europe unless you're staying in a luxury or chain hotel. Most of the hotels are located in historic buildings where renovations aren't necessarily allowed. My room had aircon that worked great, which not a lot of places have.
I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Paris. It's close to a lot of attractions, close to a metro to get around Paris, and I felt safe in this area as a solo female traveler.
Best wishes to the team at Royal Saint-Michel!...
