Note: Extremely late on reviewing this hotel so some things may have changed by now.
Stay: Couple. 5 nights in June 2023. Deluxe Double Room. 4th floor.
Staff: Excellent. So friendly and helpful. We enjoyed having a quick chat with them everyday. We were also very appreciative of the late check-out at 3pm since our flight wasn't until 9pm.
Location: Great. 6 min walk from the main station (annoying cobblestones to overcome with wheelie bags though) and most of Old Town is within a 10-15 min walk. The area can feel slightly sketchy late at night but there's people and cars everywhere, we didn't feel unsafe when returning to the hotel.
Room: Great. Was big enough for us as a couple. Bed was firm, doona was fluffy and pillows were comfy. The electronic blackout blinds were amazing, it was pitch black, best sleep I got on my entire trip in Germany, maybe even all of Europe. Massive TV which we didn't get a chance to use as we were busy being tourists. Bathroom was great, the water temp was stable, pressure was amazing (don't think it could be adjusted though, just on/off) and the rainfall showerhead was actually big enough to take a proper shower.
AC: Perfect. Cold and importantly, accurate. We had ours set at 21C and it worked perfectly. You can even lower it to 16C if you like to freeze.
WiFi: Very fast and reliable. Advertised as 500+Mbps which was accurate.
Noise: None from outside which was amazing considering it's on a main road right by the station. Not much noise from the neighbours, just the occasional door slamming here and there. Only 4 rooms on our floor anyway so not a lot of traffic. Housekeeping was amazingly quiet, barely heard them on our floor.
Other: They were a pretty new hotel at the time, so had a few kinks to iron out. Hopefully they've made some updates since we stayed.
Some instructions on how to work the electronic blackout blinds properly would probably be helpful to most people.
There was no DND sign provided so we had to make our own and the deadbolt did not work so thankfully housekeeping actually paid attention to the sign (we had housekeeping open the door even with a DND sign up at our hotel in Frankfurt).
Communication between staff got missed as we had a late check-out organised the night before but the staff scheduled to work the next day did not know so ended up knocking on our door to see what was up.
Also, when we asked about the prices for the minibar as there wasn't any info in the room, we were told 3 euros per drink or snack but when we checked out, we overheard another couple checking in being told that everything in the minibar was complimentary.
As we're not coffee drinkers, we would have preferred a kettle over a coffee machine but it was hot in Munich so we probably wouldn't have used it anyway!
The check-in machine worked great for us when we arrived late at night but I can imagine some people may not like using it.
My husband and I really enjoyed our stay here. It was perfect for what we wanted, simple but effective. A little more exxy than I would have liked to have spent but it was worth it. We won't hesitate to book here again if we get a chance to return.
Tip for guests: Look for the yellow "DKM" sign. When we got to Munich, we walked straight past as we were looking for "design- und kunsthotel münchen" specifically. Clearly missed the smaller print right next to...
Read moreWe stayed here for three nights - two in the middle of our trip and one the night before we flew home from Munich. Overall, the hotel was very nice and in a great location, just a few minutes walk from the gate to the old part of Munich. The rooms were modern and very clean, plus you actually got items from the mini-bar for free, which is unheard of these days. The people working the front desk were extremely friendly, spoke English well, and very helpful. |The only reason I give it four stars and not five is the desk is not staffed at all times and on Sundays, they leave pretty early. If you already are checked in, this isn't a problem. But we were late getting back for check-in on our final day (I want to say it was around 7 p.m.) and wasn't sure what to do. We couldn't make a call and there were no instructions. We had a reservation that we kept trying to put into the box at the door, but it kept saying "no reservation found." Thankfully, the guy that worked the desk had been at the restaurant next door and saw us there on his way out and got us in. Apparently, they send you a picture of one of the lockboxes on the wall and another picture with the code for it and inside are your room cards. That's great, except I didn't have wi-fi access (and don't have an international plan) all day because we were traveling and didn't have access to my email. If the employee hadn't come by, I'm not sure what we would have done. |(Note: If you find yourself in this same situation, there is a KFC and a Pizza Hut right across the street, and I'm guessing one of them probably has free wi-fi. Go over there, get on the wi-fi, get access to your email and then you can get all the codes you need to get in.)|The one other thing I would say is I believe all the rooms are street-facing and you do hear the trams rolling past (I think they start at 5 am - not sure what time they are done, maybe midnight or so). If you are a light sleeper and that sort of thing bothers you, then it might be an issue. We slept fine - you are in the middle of a major city afterall. |So other than the check-in snafu on our last night, it was a...
Read moreI recently stayed at the Design- und Kunsthotel München, and it truly stands out as one of the best hotel experiences I’ve had in years.
While the exterior is modest, the quality of the hotel inside is exceptional. The staff are genuinely warm, welcoming, and attentive—service that elevates the entire stay. The rooms are impressively spacious for European standards, thoughtfully designed, and fully equipped to ensure comfort.
The modern bathrooms are another highlight: powerful water pressure, heated towel racks, and a sleek design that matches the hotel’s contemporary aesthetic. These are features I believe should be standard in any four-star (or higher) property.
The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the mix of pillows provided excellent support—I adjusted to the time zone effortlessly and caught up on much-needed rest.
Location-wise, it’s hard to beat. The hotel is within walking distance of both Karlsplatz and Marienplatz, making it a perfect base for sightseeing, shopping, and dining in central Munich. There’s also a charming coffee shop right at the entrance—great for a quick espresso or light bite before heading out.
If you’re looking for a central Munich hotel with excellent service, stylish rooms, and modern amenities, I highly recommend the Design- und Kunsthotel München.
