I recently visited the Pirate Bar on Hydra Island and had a rather frustrating experience that compelled me to leave this review. While I have always appreciated the warm and friendly nature of the local people, my encounter with the American woman working at the bar left me disappointed.
I went to purchase a shirt for my girlfriend, hoping to support local businesses. However, the woman seemed more focused on her business goals than providing a pleasant customer experience. She adamantly refused to negotiate the high price tag, which was already significantly inflated. Instead, she embarked on an awkward and repetitive speech, attempting to justify the exorbitant price by claiming the shirt was "locally sourced from Uganda" and had all these fancy certifications like fair trade and organic.
The constant repetition and insistence on fake justifications made the situation cringe-worthy. It was clear that she was more interested in making a profit than connecting with customers or respecting their concerns. What added to the frustration was the fact that she repeatedly mentioned the wrong source location, stating Uganda instead of Tanzania, where the shirt was actually produced.
In an attempt to diffuse the uncomfortable atmosphere, I decided to forgo further negotiations and offered to pay the full price. Unfortunately, even that did not deter her from repeating the same spiel over and over again.
This clash between her profit-oriented approach and the genuine friendliness of the local people left a sour taste in my mouth. It's disheartening to see such a stark contrast in customer service styles within the same establishment. I came to Hydra Island to experience its authentic charm, not to be subjected to a sales pitch that lacked sincerity.
While I appreciate the efforts made by the local workers at Pirate Bar, I cannot recommend this place based on my encounter with this particular staff member. Visitors seeking a genuine and friendly experience should consider exploring other options on the island.
Hydra Island has so much to offer, and I hope that this feedback reaches the management of Pirate Bar, encouraging them to evaluate their customer...
Read moreCame here to break our fast... with a cocktail. Ended up ordering two!
The Pirate Zombie with its "overaged" Jamacian rum will have you singing a sea shanty in no time.
As we sit watching the people parade by along the port, and the traditional Greek fishing boat bobbing in the water, we feel we are now on holiday.
The staff were top notch: superbly friendly waiters (especially in contrast to the neighbouring taverna - which we left before ordering after their unfriendly welcome and never coming to take our order).
See other reviewers here for reviews of the food here... we only had the crisps served with our zombies.
Aye maties!...

The most diverse menu in Hydra which was such a welcome change given that almost everybody serves the same food. Not only is it diverse, the mains change every day, and you'll find everything from omelets to stews to biryanis.
The cocktails are excellent - both the classics like Negroni and the originals like their take on the Old Fashioned.
The service is warm and welcoming. The ambience is laid back and comforting.
We landed up going here multiple times during our short stay and strongly...
