We rented two of the hotel's most expensive rooms (private bathrooms, private balconies, A/C) for three nights. The beds were extremely comfortable, a much needed respite from our previous nights in Guatemala. The A/C worked well and gave us a nice reprieve from the jungle heat and humidity of Tikal. The food and drinks were delicious and the staff were all very friendly and accommodating.
So why only 3 stars? Mainly due to poor experiences with the owner, Oliver. We witnessed Oliver yelling at his (wonderful) staff on more than one occasion. Whenever we placed a food order with Oliver it took an hour or more to receive (with other staff members, service was quite speedy).
The icing on the cake? When Oliver came knocking on our doors at 9pm stating that it was time to settle our food bill. When we had checked in, we verified that it was okay to keep an open tab throughout our stay, to be paid upon departure, just as we had done with no problem at all of our other accommodations in Guatemala. The woman who checked us in said that wouldn't be a problem. If this was in fact a problem for Oliver, perhaps he could have come to us earlier in the day, or even the day before when the tab was opened, to discuss it. But, no. He waited until we were all in bed after having woken up early that morning for a long hot day in Tikal. We told him we would settle up in the morning before leaving. We decided to have breakfast elsewhere the following morning as we felt we had given more than enough money to this man.
Also, there was a no smoking sign clearly posted on the community balcony, but a couple of guests sat there and chain-smoked constantly. It made it an unpleasant place to relax or eat. And because the community balcony was directly below our private balconies, we couldn't even enjoy our our balconies because the smoke came right up to them. We also couldn't enjoy our own balconies because of the plethora of mouse droppings all over them. The rooms were very clean, but the balconies lacked attention.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Lacandon, but would not return or recommend the hotel to friends or family due to our uncomfortable experience with the owner and due to our inability to enjoy...

Firstly, I must commend Oliver for running a smooth ship with so much going on around him. He can give you all the info you need to organise tours, taxis, transfers etc and also has kayaks for rent so you can see some of the local fun attractions on your own. Oliver has taken the time to put together a folder of all the local attractions. This is a really useful guide and holds some gems.
The in-house laundry was a godsend for us; everything came back, and came back clean. I can picture Oliver saying, "Of course!", but some travellers will know what I mean.
The food and service was very good, and the beautiful view while eating is fantastic. We had breakfast and lunch there a couple of times. The local white fish was delicious. Also, be sure to get a BOX LUNCH if you're hitting Tikal for the day. Worth every quetzal.
The view! Try to spend at least one evening on either the upper or lower patio to take in the beautiful sunset. Get there a little early to grab the prime seats! Oops, now everyone knows. Seriously though, there aren't any bad seats!
The WiFi was strong in all common areas, and medium in our room; a double located halfway to the front on the second floor. If WiFi is a must for you, perhaps contact Oliver before hand and see if you can get a room close to the front.
All arounder. We enjoyed our stay here and would recommend to couples and dorm...
Read moreThe view from the balcony is very nice, WiFi works well and the host speaks excellent English, but doesn't respond well to criticism. As can probably be seen in his response to this review soon. ||The advertised restaurant and roof terrace isn't there at the moment due to ongoing renovations. This is fine of course, but the information and pictures should be removed untill it's done. As in contrary to what the host told us when bringing this up, some guests do like to have breakfast at their own hotel before going out. ||The double economy room itself is more economy than the price warrants. It is small and only has one light, the sheets don't fit well on the mattress and have holes in them, there is no mirror in the bathroom, the air conditioner and fan are both extremely loud, the door is made of stained glass which let's trough a lot of light and noise from the hallway.||For 37€/night we have done way better in Flores when we went there again 2...
