Icelandic hot dogs, known locally as "pylsur," are a beloved culinary delight in Iceland. They typically consist of a grilled lamb-based sausage served in a steamed bun. The toppings are what make them truly special, usually including a blend of crispy fried onions, raw onions, ketchup, sweet mustard, and remoulade (a type of sauce similar to tartar sauce). The combination of flavors and textures creates a delicious and satisfying snack that's popular among locals and visitors alike.

Bæjarins Beztu" translates to "The Best in Town" in English. So, Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur essentially means "The Best Hot Dogs in Town," which is quite fitting given its reputation for serving delicious hot dogs in...
Read moreBæjarins Beztu Pylsur is probably the most famous hot dog stand in Iceland, and it’s become a bit of a tourist attraction in its own right. The location in central Reykjavík makes it easy to stop by, but be prepared for long lines, especially around lunchtime or in the evenings when tour groups and locals alike crowd in.
The hot dogs themselves are tasty and hit the spot if you’re after a quick snack, but they don’t necessarily live up to the massive hype. Many visitors, and even locals, will tell you that you can find hot dogs at gas stations across Iceland that are just as good or even better. What really makes Bæjarins Beztu stand out are the sauces and toppings, especially if you order one “with everything” — crispy onions, raw onions, mustard, ketchup, and remoulade.
The service is fast and straightforward, but don’t expect anything fancy; this is a simple hot dog stand with limited seating nearby. Prices are reasonable for Reykjavík, though like everything in Iceland, not exactly cheap compared to elsewhere.
If you want to try it for the experience and say you’ve been, it’s worth doing once, especially if you happen to be in the area outside of peak hours. But if the line is long and you’re pressed for time, you’re not really missing out on anything life-changing. The real charm is the history and reputation, not necessarily the food itself.
Overall, Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur is fun for the novelty and a quick bite, but manage your expectations. It’s a hot dog with good toppings, not a culinary revelation, and you can find equally satisfying versions in many other spots...
Read moreYou can’t leave Iceland without grabbing a hot dog from this popular stand! Everytime I walked by during the day, there was a noticeable line which sometimes wrapped around the street corner. A hot dog is 820 ISK (about $7 USD) which makes it an attractive option for a small meal or snack, considering that the prices of food in Reykjavik are relatively high.
Luckily, the line moves pretty quickly as the menu is very simple with only hot dogs, soda and a couple of sweets. After about 10 minutes, we reached the ordering window and our hot dogs were prepared in just a minute. They were delicious! Each one comes with chopped raw onion, crispy onions, ketchup, sweet brown mustard and a remoulade sauce.
The hot dog snapped with every bite and the sauces melded together perfectly. I normally don’t like mustard, but this one was a delightful complement, not sharp like a yellow mustard. My favorite topping was the crispy onions which added another layer of texture. I’ve heard that the hot dog is made of lamb, but had I not known, I probably would not have guessed. It didn’t have a gamey lamb flavor at all.
If you’re not a fan of all the toppings, you can ask for the hot dog plain, but I recommend it with all the fixings for the...
