Umberto House Catania — Hotel in Catania

If you are going to Catania, Sicily, a good hotel choice is Umberto House. We stayed there for seven nights in August 2021. It is in a great location with lots of shops, restaurants, bakeries, pharmacies, markets, and only half a block from Borghese Gardens—a nice refuge from the hustle and bustle. It is located on the first and second European floors of an apartment building. What sets this hotel apart is the Manager/Owner, Senior Salvatore, who himself lives in an apartment in the same building. Pride of ownership is everywhere. The place is spotless and nicely decorated. Unlike sterile hotel rooms, the décor here really make you feel like you are in a home in Italy. Senior Salvo was available 24/7 for anything. He was very helpful in securing a Covid PCR test for our return to the United States. He called the lab for us and even walked to the pharmacy to make sure that they knew about us coming. When we arrived, he patiently showed us two different rooms and let us decide which one we wanted. We chose the room on the second floor with a balcony. Although a bit noisier than the first-floor quieter room, it was large, with lots of light, a wardrobe, and plenty of desk and counter space. It even had a chandelier on the ceiling. Breakfast was included. There was a good selection of cereal, yogurt, cold cuts, cheese, varied juices, bread, Italian pastries, fresh fruit, and made to order coffee. Situato in pieno centro storico in un bel palazzo d'epoca, le stanze sono belle, ma devo fare qualche appunto che abbassa il mio giudizio. Il water nonostante avesse il sigillo in carta non era stato pulito a dovere....c'era una striscia... vi lascio immaginare di cosa (l'ho segnalato la mattina seguente perché quando sono arrivato ho posato le valigie e sono subito uscito, quindi me ne sono accorto solo al mio rientro in tarda serata); la televisione sia nella mia camera che in quella di mia sorella non era sintonizza quindi non si vedeva nulla; nell'androne sarebbe opportuno mettere una fotocellula per l'accensione della luce, perché si percorrono diversi metri prima di raggiungere l'interruttore che è posto vicino il portone, quindi ci potrebbe essere rischio di inciampo. Modifico la mia recisione a fronte della risposta del proprietario: Caro proprietario • Circa la segnalazione del water sporco di cacca l’ho fatto presente l’indomani mattina alla ragazza della reception, ma evidentemente non vi parlate tra di voi. Inoltre io e la mia famiglia ci siamo confrontati sull’accaduto (che è grave), se qualcuno era andato al bagno prima di uscire (siamo 4 adulti) lo avrebbe detto senza problemi. Trovo paradossale che qualcuno possa andare in bagno e poi rimetterci il sigillo. Non ho problemi a dirle che volevo fare una piazzata alle 1:30 quando sono ritornato in camera, ma poi i miei mi hanno fatto desistere. • Circa il televisore: il cliente non deve fare la caccia al tesoro alla ricerca di istruzioni, comunque sempre la mattina seguente ho fatto presente anche questo disguido alla ragazza della reception che testualmente mi ha risposto “si, anche altri clienti mi hanno segnalato questo problema”. Quindi anche in questo caso quello che lei dice non mi torna • L’interruttore vicino all’ascensore non è visibile e poi una fotocellula offrirebbe una maggiore sicurezza (cosa imprescindibile in un esercizio pubblico) • Si è vero sono stato ospite altre volte e non ho trovato nulla da eccepire, evidentemente questa volta avete toppato e non le consento di darmi del bugiardo. • I feedback sia quelli positivi che quelli negativi servono a migliorare, in ogni caso sarebbe stato utile prima di rispondere che lei si fosse accertato se erano pervenute lamentele alla reception...

The accommodation is advertised as a hotel however, these were private apartements converted into individual rooms. The soundproofing of the doors of the rooms are so poor that we could hear others coughing all night. The windows are made of frosted glass, therefore the rooms are not too light. There was a construction going on in the inner courtyard and we could hear the noise of welding all day. During the night an old air conditioner was humming all night, we could not sleep. Besides these sewer fumes were coming from the bathroom. The last straw was the appearance of cockroaches in our childrens’ room. We have pre-paid 4 nights, but decided to leave after the first night. We have not...
