If you're looking for a place that is centrally located to the restaurants and shopping this is a good hotel. Our experience wasn't as positive as the other reviewers, but we also happened to arrive when there were strong rains which caused quite a bit of water intrusion in the hallways near the windows. ||As we traveled through Italy we noticed that we received better hotel rates booking directly with the hotel rather than online. That was not the case with Hotel Italia. We were quoted a higher rate than Priceline, but it was within $10 so we agreed. ||We were supposed to get a deluxe room, but once we got to the room, it was very run down. Yes, I know that this is an old castle, but this was upkeep issues- the door handle lock was loose, our window was wood framed and didn't close properly. With the rain I was concerned we would have puddling like I saw in the hallways. The part I couldn't get over is that we were in a corner with a view of significant pigeon droppings and maintenance debris/tools. My husband went downstairs to request a room with a better view. He was told by the gentleman that he didn't have time for this and that he was dealing with the water intrusion. ||During our travels, we've had our share of not so great rooms, but the Host's graciousness made up for it. To be honest, this was the rudest we had been treated on our 5 week trip, but I assumed it was due to the stress of the situation. He told my husband that it would be an added charge for a different room. I would've protested the added expense, but my husband didn't. I thought maybe when we checked out they would decide not to add the expense given the state of the room. We were charged the extra expense at check out. The "upgraded room" had a beautiful view and was spacious, but I wouldn't return. ||I will say the breakfast was delicious and the view while dining was my favorite part...
Read moreBooked the room last minute before a two week class. It’s very basic, a bit like a hostel, and the single room on the first floor is the size of a monastic cell with a window looking out to a wall and pigeon roosts and miniature furniture. There are two outlets, one near the floor by the front door and another high over the bed that could not be more inconvenient to make tea in the provided pot or charge your phone. The lighting is poor. Shower needs some maintenance as it’s either cold or really hot and the head is clogged with deposits. The safe is opened via a key and is not attached to anything. (Last three points explain rating) There is no staff around before 8 am or after 8 pm. Entrance and exit after hours are by a side door with a key.
All this said, it totally suited my needs. The staff were all lovely and I ran into a mutual Italian acquaintance also staying at the hotel. The fresh breakfast, served promptly at 8, is in a light filled room with a stupendous view over the roof tops and valley. They were kind enough to let me paint the view a few hours at breakfast. Location is great for as it’s a straight hike up from the parking lot and central to everything. Worth returning and if they’d could attend to the room some,...
Read moreI stayed at the hotel Italia for an extended period of time for a school program.
I’m the mornings one can find an assortment of the usual italian breakfast items; 3 kinds of brioche, cheese, meats, a coffee machine and some different cereals. Each morning was a surprise in what kind of brioche I would get for the day as the labels we’re never quite accurate - all apart of the charm!
The Hotel Italia is by far the most interesting hotel I have stayed at. Each room is completely different in size and layout. It makes staying here comfortable as unless people are being egregiously loud, you probably won’t hear them.
There were some problems throughout our stay, such as the AC leaking and a shower that would go with water, however when I would let the staff know it would be resolved before I got back to the room. The service at this hotel is unmatched.
Located right in the heart of Cortona, i’m not sure one could stay at a better location. I would recommend this...
