What an incredibly wonderful surprise of a hotel in a beautiful town where there were so many from which to choose. In doing my research from home, other reviews along with the photos of this property helped me with my decision, and we couldn't have been happier. Everything about this place was superb...from the location to the design and cleanlines as well as to the amazing staff and ownders. The rooms are birght and well designed with a minimalistic wonderul designer look to them and they were immaculate. The bed and pillows were incrdibly comfortable with the highest qaulity of sheets. We loved being in room 54 with pleanty of space and our own private terrace where we enjoyed our morning tea. The breakfasts were delicious and bountiful. An added plus was the terrace just for hotel guests they have on the top of their building where you can enjoy cocktails and a specatacular view. The staff couldn't have been any more welcoming and delightful with a very special "thank you" to Ediola in reception who is an exceptional professional with superior customer service skills. I can't say enough about this property as it trul ywas one of the highlights of our 17 day trip through southern Italy. It was hard saying "goodye" to Matera and to this gem of a hotel and the wonderful people who operate it. After touring Matera ad learning all about the Sassis, we had a real appreciation for what it took to convert this property into the first class stunning hotel that it is. Thank you, Ediola and the wonderful owners, for ALL you did to make our visit...
Read morePerfect location for visiting Matera, a wonderfully created hotel ingeniously fitted into what were caves for the stabling of horses and other livestock. Our family group, 4 adults, one infant and one very large dog were all welcomed with genuine pleasure from a whole range of staff. Our rooms were fascinating, the interior designers have every reason to be very proud of the high standard they achieved, fitting all the features of a luxurious room into a cave originally fashioned by nature thousands of years ago. Our breakfasts were excellent, served in a spotless dining area by friendly welcoming staff. A minor problem in my room was quickly resolved by the night supervisor, his faltering English and my faltering Italian resolved the situation My 2 year old granddaughter and 1 year old St. Bernard were made stars of the evening and took part in a number of selfies involving the staff. I’ve been fortunate enough to stay in a number of high quality hotels throughout Europe and North America..this proved to be one of the most enjoyable. Our visit was far too...
Read morePianelle – A Luxury Cave Experience I brought a group of American tourists to Matera in the spring. We approached the city on foot from the Gravina, and it was delightful to look across the gorge and spot our hotel. The location could not be better—street access made it easy to drop our luggage without dragging it through the old city, while the guest rooms were tucked back into the Sassi, where it was quiet and timeless.
Each cave room was unique, and our guests loved showcasing their rooms to one another. Even the guide’s single rooms were spacious and luxurious, with walk-in showers, comfortable beds, and quality linens. Some rooms revealed the cisterns underneath and offered aromatherapy experiences in the showers.
Best of all, the staff was friendly and accommodating. They even set up an aperitivo and arranged a space to teach yoga on their terrace overlooking the Sassi.
If you’re looking for an authentic cave experience with modern luxury touches, this is the...
