This bar still haunts my dreams. Not only do I think about returning to Italy nonstop, but I think about excuses to visit Matera just so that i can visit Zipa Cafe and experience the feeling I felt sitting outside their terrace drinking a negroni all over again.

I'm confused how anyone could come here and not enjoy every moment of their time spent here. If the service and friendly staff don't put a smile on your face, then what bout sitting in a terrace carved out of prehistoric rock formations and a stunning view of Matera in the background? If you're not Italian and reading negative reviews about it not being a "cafe" confuses you, just remember this part: a "cafe" in Italy is not the equivalent of a "cafe" in the US (and other countries). Some cultural insight will go a long way in keeping disappointment/embarrassment at bay :)

Then again, Zipa Cafe's slogan is "Good Vibes Only" so maybe it's good that bad-energy people are weeded out by a simple...

Drinks were expensive but excellent, as was the bruschetta. Unique place and talented bar staff, but seems to be run by someone without a ton of taste. For example, there's no need for music is beautiful and historic Matera, but when we were there they played loud French music, which made the place feel quite cheap. Why focus so many cocktails on gin and whisky when there are so many beautiful Italian drinks to play with? As a result, it is quite a basic place for basic people. Typical Instagram place where everyone just comes once for selfies.

Every seat is different, and while some look comfortable, others they just add tiny bean bag chairs to a slanted area along the pathway. They literally could not put the drinks in our table without them spilling. Some seats are large for at least 4, others tiny, and you can't rearrange the seats even a little for...

So disrespectful and disappointed! We came to this place because on Google it’s look nicer. We waited for 10 minutes to be seated and finally they give us a place. And then again waiting as there was no one to give us a manu as we were expecting for the menu surprisingly the waiter came and tell us that there are 4 people that were already waiting for this place and we been at this bar for like almost 20 minutes there were no one to wait! So he was asking if we can change the place to another I was like no that’s fine but then he insisted so we got up and followed him he took us next to the wall and said you can sat on the wall as this is ours concept to be seated on the wall! Will never recommend it to anyone...

I know, I know, I’m starting to sound like a broken record about just how mind-bogglingly, tear-inducingly beautiful Matera is. But, it’s not just worth visiting for the views. In between gawping at its splendour and taking a bajillion photos of every corner, there’s actually a fair bit to do and see in the city. I’ve compiled a few of my favourite experiences, things to do, eat and see in Matera: THINGS TO DO: - Matera has a number of ancient cave churches dotted around the Sassi, filled with frescos and other fascinating historic details. - You can also visit old cave homes which have been converted into museums, to experience how inhabitants used to live. - Casa Noha is a converted 16th century home in the Sassi that has been turned into a multimedia exhibition telling the history of Matera - Stay in a cave hotel to really appreciate the historical dwellings that make the city so unique. I stayed in Caveoso Hotel, and some other good looking options are Aquatico Cave Luxury Hotel, Sextantio Le Grotte Della Civita, and Sant’Angelo Luxury Resort. - Matera overlooks a dramatic gorge, and it’s a great hiking route for a spectacular view back over the city. I didn’t have time on my trip, but it’s on the bucket list for next time! DINING AND DRINKING: - Zipa Cafe, a must visit cafe and cocktail bar built into the rocks - La Lopa, a cosy, rustic traditional restaurant serving up hearty local fare - Regiacorte, a chic fine dining spot offering spectacular terrace views - 5 Lire Matera, a quick serve pizza joint with a balcony overlooking the Sassi - Area 8, an achingly hip multi-purpose venue that serves up food and drink, as well as DJ sets and live entertainment. Wes Anderson has been here, so if that’s not a seal of approval I don’t know what is. - Crialoss Cafe for a spritz with panoramic views Let me know if you have any other Matera recommendations, or what else you’d like to know! #italiait #visititaly #visititalia #italytravel #italy_vacations #italy_destinations #italyholiday #travelitaly #uktravelblogger #matera #materatravel #materaitaly #visitmatera #europe_vacations #europedestinations italy travel destinations, matera italy travel

What a magical place! Words cannot describe the aesthetics of this juxtaposition of cozy cushions distributed over the typical Materan rocks. And don’t get me started on the interior where a luxuriously minimalistic golden coffee barista bar is perfectly integrated in the raw Sasso-Surrounding. While this place could make five stars for the looks alone, they don’t stop here. To make things even more perfect, their service is super friendly and attentive with amicable waiters ready to serve you a vast array of modern takes on typical ingredients, amazing cocktails (try their monacello, it is to die for) and tasty nibbles. I cannot rate this place high enough. Go there, be amazed!

Atemberaubendes Ambiente, mitten in einer Höhle, bzw. im Felsen, mit super Aussicht. Überfreundliches Personal und für die Lage wirklich gutes Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis.
