Heaven on earth. The serenity of the Southern Tuscan landscape is literally biblical. We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 night stay atop the city walls listening to church bells. If you don't book this place while visiting Montepulciano, you are missing out really on the complete experience. We were lucky enough to also book a wine tasting at the De' Ricci tasting cellar. This allowed for us to learn a more thorough history of Montepulciano which includes the very historic Il Riccio. The rooms are updated and were some of the most modern we stayed in and all of our nine days in Central Italy. If you are smart, at some point you get on the little red golf cart tour that circles the city and also for €10, gets you to the top of the hill that you will have to climb several times during your stay. We didn't mind as we appreciated the extra exercise. We would recommend doing a visit to the Icario winery and tasting room which is about a 30 minute walk from the top of town. Some people looked at us a little crazy, while others cheered our bravado. We can't emphasize enough how great of a property this is, we had people poking their heads into the lobby if you would even call it a lobby while we were walking out wondering what beautiful place this was as I had mentioned Oh my God it's amazing We are actually staying here. The small breakfast they offer is great, and we had a cappuccino and enjoyed the quietness of the early morning. The highlight though really is opening your window on the top of town to the Tuscan Hill side and country below. Listening to the church bells and serenity here is something we will not too soon forget. Without hesitation, this is easily a four to five star place.

Perfectly located just off piazza grande, the hotel is breathtaking when you walk through the ancient old door into a beautiful courtyard. Mr Caroti warmly welcomed us. Our room #4 had a spectacular view over the town and valley. It was beautifully decorated and the large bed was very comfortable. We appreciated the hot water kettle and coffee. There is a lovely terrace on the rooftop. We chose not to purchase the breakfast. This hotel was perfect for our one night stay in Montepulciano. A final note about car parking in hopes of helping others in the future. When we booked the hotel we received the ZTL authorization which we printed. Our usual practice with these hilltop towns is to park somewhere and then go explore, find the hotel and investigate their parking. When we arrived Montepulciano we ended up parking near the Bus Station and walked in a very crowded eastern gate main entrance and then all the way up to piazza grande. When we met Mr Caroti he gave us a map and advised us to park in the P7 lot and with our ZTL we would not have to pay for parking overnight. We went ahead and had lunch and later in the afternoon collected car from the bus station lot and made our way to P7 and fortunate to get a spot. Since we knew what would be involved getting back to the hotel from P7 we only took one suitcase since only staying one night. There are a lot of stairs and steep cobbled streets. It is well worth the effort but just wanted to share our process!

My partner and I had such a great time here! It was the perfect home base for Montepulciano, the Val d'Orcia, and Tuscany in general. The views were 10/10, the room was lovely, the breakfast bar was also great, but most of all the hotel staff was truly top notch. We were having some car trouble clear across the Val d'Orcia and the staff went out of there way (after hours!) to make sure we were taken care of. This hotel is truly one of a kind!
We found this wonderful hotel (almost more like a B&B) in Rick Steves' Italy guidebook. We booked two suites, n.31 and n.33. Both are amazing with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. The owners are so friendly. We were personally escorted and given tours of our rooms and their features. Each room is unique. The lobby area is adorably decorated with hedgehogs (which is what Il Riccio means).
