If you are looking for a unique, old-world experience while in Georgetown, this is it! Located in the heart of the Heritage quarter and proximate to dozens of restaurants and bars, former Chinese elites’ homes have been converted to a boutique hotel. Entrance is through the charming Muntri cafe that serves wonderful breakfast and other meals and drinks. The hotel itself spans several buildings that are adjacent to or across each other - crossing the street (Jalan Muntri) for some. Front desk staff is very friendly and eager to please. The rooms themselves are representative of old Chinese homes - long , beautifully designed (with open to sky courtyards with rainwater collection and drainage granite embankments, and antique tiles, decorated, and antique wood-furnished) entryways leading to rooms at the rear. My room was enormous, consisted of a spacious living area equipped with no less than 3 beds. Bathroom, toilet and shower areas were also spacious. The whole place, despite being old, was spotlessly maintained. Only downsides were a bit of sloppy housekeeping and safe that would not work - front desk staff handed a key to operate the safe, in lieu. Don’t look for modern styles in this wonderfully charming place! Doors are old wood, with a slide lock that can be padlocked for security. There are gaps in doors and windows in the rooms had those are to be expected. While shower and bathroom facilities are modern, water pressure is weak hot water from the in-room boiler is unpredictable. Regardless, given the outdoor heat and humidity, lukewarm or cold showers are welcome. Security and emergency arrangements are a bit iffy, however. No phones inside the room and front desk contact when needed is by calling the hotel’s Jain number via a Malaysia mobile phone, or by WhatsApp texts to front desk personnel (including to “uncle Vincent” for emergencies after 11 PM). All in all, a unique experience;...
Read moreWe had planned to stay at a sister hotel on the same street nearby (which we had enjoyed two years ago) but mistakenly chose this hotel. We were at first happy to give it a try since we had previously walked by and admired it's elegant facade. But in reality we found the hotel in need of a much needed refresh. As other reviewers had indicated, beware if they bring you across the roads to the shophouse rooms. The original concept in 2009 was to restore these pre-war houses for travellers to enjoy. I certainly enjoy a good restoration but in this case the rooms looked worn rather than historic. There were many historical artifacts that made the room feel dusty and run down. Similarly for the common area - the restored glory had faded. One of the issues we feel was that these areas were opened to the external elements and therefore collected dust and wear and tear over time. The room door was locked with a rickety bolt. The TV only had one atenna channel even though 6 were promised. There was no blanket, only a thin bed spread. We were all ready to check out and find alternative accomodations but credit to the staff they tried their utmost best to find suitable rooms for us. The best kept rooms are probably the mews, in the same block as the check in area / eatery. The rooms are closed off from the elements. Even then, our room toilet sprang a leak during our stay, the toilet flush water flowed incessantly and certain parts of the room was called with dust due to the way the room was set up (see photo) and no fault of the staff. The price was reasonable but with such price there were many other better alternatives nearby, many of them new hotels. We checked our travel apps and rooms were available even for the day itself. I appreciate the intent of the owners but probably won't return unless there's a...

Pros: large rooms with sitting area (good for families) daily housekeeping and clean rooms good service foc drinks and water daily good location
Cons: puzzled by the bed blanket that is so thin and narrow, and hardly covers you unless you sleep still and not move around. And I'm a typical female small size. There is no extra blankets but even then another thin narrow blanket would not help much? Definitely need improvement here. I'll be surprised if no one has given same feedback
Shower screen covers halfway but feels almost non existent. With the type of rain shower and shower head, even when I try to stand really at a corner, half the outside bathroom floor is wet. Even with a floor mat, it is soaked.
Toilet seat is narrower than rim - when you sit on it, you just feel so much of your thigh touching the rim. Trust me this feels kinda off. Doesn't change no matter how I position myself. And I don't have big butt or thighs 😅
steps to rooms are very steep and each step is high. Thankfully hotel staff helped with baggage up/down. Daily though you have to be quite careful especially coming down the steps. Please angle yourself sideways to step down. If you are not that mobile, it is definitely a challenge.
Price point is ok for location and size but I doubt I'll be back. Sorry but I gotta...
