Positives: Leaving
Negatives: the owner - 24/7 barking of dozens of poor neglected and abused dogs in this barrio - more than a 15 storey climb from town - every noise travels uphill
Dermot has a strict cancellation policy -if you get here and hate it you're screwed Know your VRBO and Airbnb rights BEFORE you book
But don't take my word - here's what others say about Dermot and Casa Pipila:
Jinru on Airbnb "make sure hot water is available"
Isabel - Airbnb (robbed) "Someone who had a copy of the keys entered the apartment then stole over $200 USD cash from the carry-on bag that I left on the bed in my room. I grabbed my passport from the same pocket the money was in and saw it there. It is apparent the owner knows he is not securing trustworthy people to have access to his rentals. When I requested a refund of the apt rental amount (I can't get my stolen cash back), he only refunded me $10 (the bill was $163 for two days rental, but with over $363 loss altogether). Quite interesting that I paid a "cleaning fee" that couldn't be refunded at all, yet resulted in the cleaner stealing my money. Horrible experience"
Guistina on Airbnb "It was an awful experience :( The neighbourhood was not nice at all! It was the in Guanajuato Ghetto. Our friend who were staying in town were told not to walk at night there because it might not be so safe. When we got to the apartment there were there was not enough heat we were cold all night long. The second bed was really gross. It was so bad I had to sleep on a really uncomfortable couch. The whole thing was so uncomfortable we payed 2 nights and only spend one there."
David - Airbnb "Our host did not make us feel welcome at all, he was extremely rude."
Bojan - Airbnb "The communication with Dermot was disappointing. We perceived that a concern which we voiced in a frank and open manner was not taken seriously and treated disrespectfully. Indeed, we felt that he was mainly occupied with arranging his schedule (which is okay, but should not dominate communication) and worried more about a good review than our honest concerns"
Ariane V - VRBO "He (Dermot) kind of made a big story for one broken glass"
Louis - Airbnb "We pretty much agree with review of Cate who writes: "We stayed in the middle apartment which was visually charming, with great views, but not very comfortable and a bit off in function. Also the sheets seemed old. These are comments have been made by others regarding this site, so we felt it important to call it out again since one key to travel is comfort and convenience. Also it looks like apartment has heating but you will be asked for 50 pesos a day to get heater else you will have no heating.
Joe & Jen - VRBO "The loud music goes late into the night and can be easily heard in the apartment"
Ryan - Airbnb "One of the bedrooms is located directly next to a rooftop of the next door neighbor he keeps his dogs up on the roof all day and all night. The dogs bark constantly (yes even at night)"
Maria - VRBO "Three dogs that barked all night long, every night"
Eun - Airbnb "The bathroom and couches were all very dirty. And the noise level is very high. I would not recommend this place"
Knikki - Airbnb "In order to reach the apartment you have to go down approximately four flights of very steep, very narrow, very uneven stairs"
Emily - Airbnb "I did not feel the listing was accurate"
Wei-An on Airbnb "Unfortunately ... his "property manager" was a bit difficult to reach and didn't know much when we had questions. There were a Scorpion crawling around when we tried to take an extra blanket out from closet, and the bed sheets were not really clean."
Michael - Airbnb "In fairness to potential guests it should be more clearly communicated that the apartments are a long climb up or down to reach any roadway that can accommodate a taxi"
Linda V - VRBO "downside is...
Read moreJust now seeing these negative reviews and thought I would share my experience. We stayed in July 2017 for 3 nights. Dermot was out of town but Martin met us by the Pipila statue and we walked down the hill to the apartment. Martin was very nice, gave us a tour of the apartment and from the balcony, gave us a little tour of the city below and where to go. The middle apartment that we rented was perfect for our stay. I didn't feel like we were in a ghetto and we walked down the hill several times during our stay and even up the hill a couple of times. Never during our entire stay did we feel like we were in any danger. The apartment itself was in good shape. The big jugs of water were a nice surprise so we didn't have to keep buying water during our stay. There was plenty of hot water - although with separate hot and cold faucets it took a little time to get the temp correct. Dogs? yes, we experienced the barking dogs but found that they didn't bark all night long and it seemed like it wasn't specific to this area - we saw dogs all over the city. We...
Read moreWe spent a few days in this beautiful place and really liked it. The view is incredible, when you are looking from a room you have the whole city right there. The place is super close to the famous Callejon del Beso and the Monument of Pipila. If you don’t want to take the narrow streets up the hill, there is a cable car going from the center. The apartments are super comfortable, there was everything we needed, a microwave, coffee maker, soap, fresh towels, and even a book with recommended places and restaurants around. The internet was pretty fast since I’m also working while traveling, it’s really important for me to have good internet. We also got to meet the owner, he is a fun and nice guy and works hard to keep the place maintained. Thank you for a great experience and we are definitely...
