I think the comment about giving money to a Chinese entrepreneur rather than a locally owned business is fair, but my stay here was very comfortable and I will return next time I'm in Kathmandu. I moved to Hotel Taishan after spending two nights at Hotel Buddha Land, just across the street. I actually found the building to be somewhat pleasant -- a large interior courtyard distinguishes the hotel from other buildings and there are a few Chinese-influenced shops scattered about. My room was decorated with a few Chinese accents, a comfortable bed and desk, and the breakfast was solid. The food is a typical Chinese breakfast, which I tend to enjoy, but the chef was willing to make something western as well. Very clean, everything works, spacious rooms, very comfortable bedding (important: nights are cold in Kathmandu in November!), good wifi, reasonable breakfast. You can tell the place is Chinese-owned not just because of the Chinese writing everywhere or the fact that (exceptionally for Nepal) the staff are grumpy, but because in the middle of so much wonderful architecture, the building is a bare concrete cube with no attempt at beautification. The only color against a background of whitewashed walls comes from the fire extinguishers in the hallways and the blue bin liners in the bathroom. Also, you might ask yourself whether you should give your money to a Chinese entrepreneur rather than to a Nepalese or Tibetan family. But if you want bare functionality at $35, this...
