Best Momos in Thamel - no competition.
This place is the definition of a hole in the wall - we came here based on google reviews and literally walked off the back alley, through a garden, in front of someone's house which they are claiming to be this restaurant, but so worth it. Just absolutely fantastic momos. We literally compared every other momo we had to these for the rest of our trip, and nothing came close!
Anjana - was the owner of this place, a literal mom and pop restaurant, they were making everything fresh to order - because of that, if you have a large order, be prepared to wait. We showed up with 18 people, and the wait was a little long for our food, but so worth it.
In my opinion the lamb momos were the best! I would suggest you mix it up and get some gravy momos, some steamed, and then some half steamed half fried, I personally did not like the fried momos, but I also don't gravitate towards fried foods for the most part. The half steamed half fried were perfect as they were soft and crunchy!
We will definitely be coming back here, and I wish all the success for Anjana because they are so sweet and the food...
Read moreWe recently finished off the Annapurna Circuit and ended up eating here both before AND after our trek. It was 5 mins walk from our hotel in Thamel, down a small side street. We had plenty of momos during our trek and none of those compared to the ones at Newa Momo Restaurant. Their dough is nice and thin with a variety of juicy fillings. We learned that the owner and her partner have been doing this for over two decades and they make everything to order. We were sorry to hear about the bad reviews, but this is not a place for backpackers rushing for fast food. Food made in a haste can get you sick. You can tell that this food is made with love and care. We were so impressed with their food that we ended up taking a cooking class from the owner during our last afternoon in Kathmandu. We definitely appreciated all the hard work that went into their food after the cooking class. We decided to learn to make their samosas and vegetarian momos. The owner is a very patient and encouraging teacher. She also gave us tips for different momos (meat and dessert). We definitely recommend this place to...
Read moreEasily the best momos in Kathmandu. I don't typically eat buff (water buffalo) but Auntie makes really delicious buff momos--the good quality meat she uses is tender, gristle-free and YUMMY.
Newa Momo also has the biggest, most creative selection of momos I have seen anywhere. In addition to the typical veg, chicken, buff, she makes mutton (goat) momos, spinach cheese momos, and to-die-for fried mushroom momos (my most recent tasting and new favorite).
I also love her daal & saag and awesome aloo paratha. I have basically never eaten anything she made that wasn't great. She is especially considerate about modifying spicyness, allergen ingredients, etc. AND she even offers cooking classes so you can learn how to make some of her fantastic recipes once you go home.
Basically, you gotta TRY this place. It's tucked away like a secret, but absolutely...
