Wow, where to start with this place? I know… DON’T STAY HERE! For the money, this is the possibly worst hotel experience I’ve ever had. This hotel is awful. it is a run down old place with a million issues. I realized during my stay that it is pretty much only used by the Chinese bus tour companies. I made the mistake of thinking it is a legitimate accommodation option in Queenstown. I was wrong. A few issues I experienced: I booked a junior suite with balcony. unfortunately the balcony is inset from the exterior, such that from the sitting room you’re just staring at a wall (see photo). it’s not a pleasant place to spend time. it feels claustrophobic. There is not a single lamp in the entire suite - lights are either fully on or fully off. Even in the bedroom - no bedside lamps! The lighting has the vibe of an Stasi interrogation room. The wifi in my room was a disaster. Best case I can play youtube videos at 240p, but much of the time is doesn’t work at all. I had to buy additional expensive international data due to this problem. Spoke to the front desk multiple times about the issue and the response was “oh well, ,sorry about that”. totally unacceptable for a hotel at this price point. Numerous other indications of a run-down place that should’ve been renovated years ago: the bathroom faucet is loose and flopping around randomly. Every surface (closet doors etc) has scratch marks from years of use. The coffee table in the sitting room area is very wobbly, has the feeling of poorly assembled Ikea furniture. Cobwebs all over the property and when I opened the windows I found cobwebs in the corners of the windows. Clearly not cleaned in a long time. You get the idea. BTW, this is at least the 10th time I’ve stayed in Queenstown in the last few years, so I know this market (though obviously not well enough to avoid this place.. lesson learned). Atrociously poor value. Don’t make the mistake I did, stay elsewhere!

Dirty, old and broken Don’t stay here for more than one night if you can help it. Carpet in hallways have never seen a vacuum cleaner. Bath had a dirt ring around it, had to ask for it to be cleaned. It was dark and dingy, no airflow so steam from shower made the room damp. Only had a lamp light at night no lights in the main room. Bed was comfortable and sheets were clean. Laundry - had to get coins for it, I wanted to switch the water to cold as to not shrink my clothes and reception said it was cold only, I turned it on and it was full steaming hot, I had to go back down and ask if they had pliers to switch it to cold as it had no knob but they said maintenance weren’t there in the weekend so had to go back down get a refund and switch machines. After all that they didn’t have any clothing racks so had to hang it all over the room on chairs and cupboards. Being winter in Queenstown it is freezing, heater was broken so had to go down and ask for a mobile heater which didn’t do much so I asked for another one so had 2 heaters next to my bed. It’s pretty dated and I don’t think anyone really cares.

I’m not one to normally write lengthy reviews but people need to be aware of how bad my 3 night stay at Copthorne lakefront was. It was truly the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed at -just awful. I do not recommend!!! ||Novotel was a million times better in everyway! Book Novotel not Copthorne!! ||1. Arrived at Copthorne to a very dated old hotel. Check in took for ever and I was treated terribly. The lady at front counter kept saying my card was declined??? (for the $50 deposit hold for the room). I had to wait a very long time for the manager. A large tour bus arrived and they had to check them all in and I was told to take a seat. I had been travelling for two days from Europe so was really really exhausted. I showed reception my account details and clearly money was in the account and explained it was their machine that wasn’t working but my card. They made it seem like it was my fault my card wasn’t working. I asked to pay another way and was told she needed to speak to her manager. Finally it went through after about 29 attempts. My card worked - I wasn’t the issue it was their machine. |2. Secondly the hotel is very old and dated. It’s actually disgusting. The hallways all need a really good vacum. It’s gross how dirty it was. I went to check out the private spa area and big hair balls were on the ground. Yuck. |3. When I finally got to my room there was long black hairs on my bed and bathroom. I thought the room was so unclean. For what I paid nearly $400 a night it was so so over priced. Even for Queenstown. |4. I rung up reception and asked for a couple of extra complimentary coffee sachets and the reception guy didn’t understand English at all. I had to ask to be transferred to someone that spoke English. When ordering towels or coffee they would give me 1 or 2. And quite grumpy on arrival like I was being annoying. |5. My main reason for this review is the boiling hot water safety hazard. My shower kept going boiling hot. Like extremely hot!!! Without notice. I burnt my back the first day. I rung and told them and they said I had to kept the water running on cold longer? They said it was because the hotel was very empty and I needed to run the water? I asked to change rooms even though my room had a beautiful view and I’d paid for lakefront. They said there was no point as if my room had this issue the whole building would? The manager said it was just because the hotel wasn’t busy and to just leave the water running longer? (At this point the hotel was extremely full of tourists). So the option was to have a cold/luke warm shower or risk it turning boiling hot if kept on warm. If you have a child I strongly don’t recommend this hotel due to the old water system. It’s actually so so dangerous. The issue continued the whole stay. On the second day I burnt my face really really bad. I finally got the courage to ask if I can please change rooms and I was told there are no rooms available except basic ones and if I can just wait for the maintenance crew to check it out. I wasnt having another cold shower and said I’d just move. The new room was an awful dark double room. No view and looked out to other hotel rooms. I was given a free breakfast ($30) and two drink vouchers. I was made to feel like I was lying and being a real pain to ask to move. The manager said he thought it was strange only my room had the issue as they all had the same water supply?? I think he thought I was making it up. As if I’d want to change rooms and back up all my stuff after travelling for days?? The new room was awful and miles away from anything. It was clearly dirty too. I couldn’t wait to leave and check out. Awful experience and completely waste of money. |6. No air con in the rooms- so get very hot. Especially at night the room was so stuffy. |7. Bad hotel layout. You can get lost so easily. ||Side note - Novotel Queenstown is amazing. It is a million times better than Copthorne. Modern, clean, friendly/generous staff. All speak English. I asked for some extra coffees a few times and the lovely staff gave me two huge handfuls both times. They were amazing. Thank you so so much Novotel. DO NOT BOOK COPTHORNE...
