Have stayed a few times at Lylo across different room types (pods/double room/queen interior with bathroom). All of the rooms are pretty nice, they’re really clean and well maintained. The pods are spacious inside and are really private, if you’re a bit claustrophobic probably not the best option for you but I really enjoyed them.
The double room is nice, it’s a really good basic private room. In the room I had I didn’t have air con though so it got hot really easily however it wasn’t such a big deal for me.
We checked out today and had a queen interior, the room itself is compact but comfortable. The private bathroom is so nice especially in a hostel situation, there’s a tv, sink and aircon too. Definitely recommend elevating your stay by getting a queen interior.
The rooms can be a bit stuffy as a lot of rooms don’t have windows but it’s not a major deal. The water from the shower in the queen interior can fill up and end up on the floor where the toilet is which makes the ground really wet. We had one bar of soap for the sink but would love if there was body wash/more soap for the shower. They’re not massive cons though just a bit of feedback.
The beds across the board are super comfortable and the common areas are really well decorated and looked after. Some of the showers could be a little bit cleaner, but as it’s summer it’s definitely picking up. There is a HappyTravel desk so perfect if you want info/need to make reservations. When we were leaving there was a tattoo/barber shop pop up which was sooo neat! Staff always super lovely, super handy having Miss Lucy’s there for a snack/drink. All in all, love Lylo and 100% recommend staying. I’ve seen a few bad reviews but tbh Lylo are probs the best hostel in NZ, you just need to make sure you’re picking a room type that...
Read moreThe pods are great and clean, staff were ignorant and not good at all ! There is 0 atmosphere , more life in a graveyard ! upstairs area had pretty posh facilities for a hostel ! mixed feelings about this stay especially last day!!
It is sad to say this for a business but unfortunately places like this, beautiful, comfortable, I would like to give it 5 stars but it is disappointing that they have the majority of the staff in customer service with terrible service, with so many people wanting to work, they should give people the opportunity who really put in the effort to keep the business afloat. My experience since I arrived with my friend was uncomfortable. The girl at the reception, LEXI, was very rude from the beginning, my friend and I thought it was normal in a self-service hostel because at check-in she told us: "There are the screens, register with your information." My friend and I were really surprised but we let it pass. On our second booking back from Queenston I went to the cafeteria and only ordered a sandwich, there was no one waiting for a turn and I asked the colored girl for one and she just continued cleaning the glasses, and talking to the receptionist Lexi. They ignored me. Then a guy who worked with them arrived and realized that I was waiting there after 10 minutes and he took out the sandwich and told me if it was for take away and I was already very upset. In the end I had to eat my sandwich without the coffee because I ended up waiting for the staff to serve me. At the exit was the worst, the girl Lexi spoke very rudely to us about storing and collecting our suitcases, the worst thing was that she was afterwards talking and complaining to other staff, really very unprofessional. please change that staff for people who really want to...
Read moreLyLo is probably the most beautiful hostel in all of New Zealand. The design and comfort of the facilities are outstanding, and the atmosphere is welcoming. The hostel also features an on-site bar with regular entertainment and events, as well and a really cool bar team as a Happy Travels desk, offering excellent advice for tours, rental cars, and more.
A special thank you goes to Lisa, who works at Happy Travels. She speaks both German and English fluently and takes great care in helping guests. Her knowledge of Auckland/Newzealand and available activities is exceptional, and I truly appreciated the time she took to advise me thoroughly.
However, I must also mention a significant downside. The service at LyLo's reception is, unfortunately, lacking. During my first stay, I observed that the women working at the front desk spent hours chatting in the back office, neglecting guests who needed assistance. Lisa often stepped in to help, although this is not her responsibility. It was disappointing to see such little commitment from the reception team. I had the feeling the female receptionists prefer to hide in the back instead of helping guest. I saw that many times while my 2 stays at lylo. I mean the Check In at the Kiosk is pretty good, but not everyone have enough knowledge to do it by themselves. Despite this, two receptionists truly stood out: Matthew and Markus. Both were consistently present, helpful, and professional. They offered outstanding service and made a real difference during my stay.
While I'm not writing to complain, I do want to highlight that service quality can improve. Thanks to Lisa, Matthew, and Markus, I still give LyLo 5 stars. I will definitely return and recommend it to others.
Thank you for everything! Best...
