Absolutely wonderful evening with painting class led by Connie at the Auckland City Hotel.

I have been attending "entertainment painting" classes for about 3 years now. This is easily the best experience offered in Auckland. Connie was clearly an experienced artist and brought enthusiasm, guidance and energy to the event. The Auckland City Hotel is an absolutely beautiful venue that airy, spacious and divine. So if you're looking to take your "entertainment painting" to the next level, then this is it.

For those who haven't tried "entertainment painting", this is a fantastic activity which allows you to get away from the normal stress of life and explore how your mind will choose to express a work of art. When you are done, you have a souvenir which you may or may not be proud of. I was excited to attend one of the painting workshops and appreciated the creativity and materials. However, as an Asian participant, I couldn’t help but notice that more attention seemed to be given to certain others and familiar faces in the room, while I didn’t receive much interaction (zero) or any support during the session. Neither I was offered paint or towels, I always needed to request for it everytime, but the others in my table (who were white) were always offered paint and towels by the assistant (yes the assistant would skip the Asians in my table). This may not have been intentional, but it did leave me feeling overlooked.

A more balanced approach in engaging with all participants would help make the experience feel more inclusive and welcoming for everyone, regardless...

I booked a private sitting with Connie for my work team. It was a last minute booking due to another place we booked double booking as. Connie was accommodating to our last minute request and the size of our group. Most of us hadn't done this activity. Connie made us feel comfortable and welcome as soon as we walked in the venue. Her coaching and jovial spirit was great. She has a lovely energy and teaches so well. We thought this was paint by numbers, it wasn't and we were thinking we wouldn't be able to do the painting justice but her teaching skills and patience helped us through the process really well.
