One of my most memorable worst stays at a "hostel" in over 20years of travel that it warrants taking the time to write a review!. Honestly this is a bar with accommodation tacked on as a money generating afterthought. Customer service left a lot to be desired. The cold hostility and unhelpfulness of one of the afternoon bargirls was ridiculous! As a traveller who has travelled a long way, a greeting and offer of a seat/to put down bags shouldn't be too much to ask. When it did come time for check-in the electronic keycards completely did not work for some time..and apparently she did not have a set of keys to open the doors(!!) Unbelievable. Not only that, I did not get given any map, or introduction to the city(so I don't recommend this place to stay for actual tourists, maybe just people visiting friends). When I later in my stay asked this same girl if I could print my flight tickets...flat out, No she couldn't do it...hence, the classification as a bar, rather than an accommodation. I had to go to the Novotel accross the road where I am not even a guest and ask them which they did so kindly and helpfully ...almost every simple question I asked got an ""I don't know"" from this girl . For this abomination of customer service from this one sour girl my stay in Gdansk and memories of this city were ruined and I was wondering if the town is racist or just anti tourist. The morning breakfast staff were much more kind human beings at least. The facilities were better but the bathroom was mixed gender and the shower just had a flimsy light white curtain which blew and stuck to your body as you tried to shower. The floor was very slippery and privacy was bad while showering as there was not really anywhere to hang your clothes so you had to come out into the public area to get your clothes for changing into. The superfcial look of this place was nice and clean (although the room smelt foul but due to another guest), all I remember was the cold heartedness and the dysfunction - when I finally got in the room the key she gave me also didn't open the locker as they are all labelled wrongly. The locker offered to me was high in the sky even standing on a chair it would have been hard to reach let alone store a laptop safely without it falling and breaking. The electronic door also was difficult to get open the first time...I always had to try a few times. There were no individual bed lights and a card was needed to operate the light so it was either pitch black or completely bright in the room. As the room was above a bar there was noise and cigarette smoke coming into the room(I had specifically asked for no smoking). There wasn't much social atmosphere in the hostel because there was nobody much around besides breakfast even in the bar(which is also why the girl was definitely not so busy she should have been able to answer some simple questions/do her job if she was acting as a reception). I recommend you to try to stay in the other actual hostel just a few doors down for a more pleasant and functional...
Read moreThe check-in took more than 30 minutes when we arrived at the hostel. Despite the fact that we had a room confirmation the hostel was overbooked. At the reception they explained that it was due to some kind of technical problem which they had experienced more than once before. We were told that they did have a room for us in which we could spend the first two nights and after that we would have to move to some other hostel/hotel (and that they would arrange everything about it). We were happy that we had a bed but the room did not live up to the standard of what we booked - for instance the room didn't have aircondition. After the two nights we had to move to the place they found for us. It turned out to be a hotel more than 3 km from the city centre. We complained because we paid to stay in the centre and not 3 km away in some suburb. At the reception we experienced poor service and they kept on saying that it wasn't their mistake, because their system made the mistake. Well, that might be true, but it wasn't our mistake either. We ended up getting some kind of compensation because we kept on discussing with them. But we really spent a lot of time at the reception talking to people that mostly had their own perspectives and...
