I picked this hotel because of the great reviews from everyone. There were 17 of us, and we were coming from a Christmas market river cruise. Now, I wasn't expecting the hotel to have our rooms ready and waiting for all of us at 10:30 in the morning, so most of us ventured out in the pouring rain to the local Christmas markets. 2 of the rooms were ready and those people checked in. We were back in the hotel around 1 pm soaking wet and were told that the rooms were still not ready. At this point, there are 10 of us waiting in the lobby. We kept being told that housekeeping was working on our rooms. We didn't get into our rooms until 3:30pm, and we saw countless other people being checked in. Not sure why you wouldn't prioritize cleaning rooms for guests you have waiting in the lobby for 2 hours.
The room itself was spacious, no complaints there. The pillows were basically non-existent, they were totally flat. FYI-for the summer-they do have AC in the room but didn't look like you could control it?
Location: right across from the Spalentor City Gate, and 15-minute walk to the markets and 10 to restaurants etc. However, it is at a very busy intersection so expect street noise. We had to open up the window because it was hot in the room and you definitely need ear plugs. We were on the 4th floor.
Bathroom-decent size, however the bath tub is a huge step up, so might be a challenge for people with...
Read moreWe chose Hotel Spalentor for a two day stay after a Viking Rhine River cruise due to it's central city location and positive Google ratings. The Hotel and personnel were very accommodating with storing our luggage upon our morning arrival until our rooms were ready for check-in, helping us to understand the benefits of the Basel card included with our stay, and offering recommendations for exploring Basel. The hotel's location is very convenient to public transportation which can be beneficial for those who may find walking the hilly terrain difficult. We found the rooms to be large and comfortable (especially by European standards). Though the rooms appear modern and basic, we found them to be very clean, the amenities sufficient, and beds were very comfortable. The hotel does have an elevator which is also a plus for getting luggage to upper floor levels. We did find that the air conditioning struggled to keep the room temperature at a the setting we desired, but this was not a big problem due to the moderate temperatures during our stay. We did have breakfast one morning and we found the buffet to be average to above average. We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. Though there are very likely Basel hotels that are more luxurious and offer better amenities, this hotel did not disappoint and we can recommend you consider it for...
Read moreLocated beside the lovely Spalentor, Hotel Spalentor welcomed me with its traditional charm. The establishment radiated true four-star quality, from the pristine cleanliness of the rooms to the comfortable embrace of the beds. The room's aesthetics were a soothing blend of thoughtful lighting and a harmonious color scheme, enhancing the tranquil experience.
The delightful presence of complimentary local candies in my room was a testament to Hotel Spalentor’s commitment to crafting an unforgettable guest experience. These thoughtful gestures highlighted the hotel's attention to detail and desire to share a taste of local sweetness with its visitors. Equally impressive was the heartfelt warmth of the reception staff, which paralleled the comfort of the hotel itself.
It is noteworthy, however, that Hotel Spalentor steps back from contemporary tech trends—missing are USB charging ports, US electrical sockets, or a master switch for the room's lighting at arm's reach from the bed. Yet, the absence of these modern conveniences in no way overshadowed the stay's overall excellence, which remained undiminished by such...
