I stayed at this hotel in Basel while traveling from Paris to Interlaken, and unfortunately my experience was quite disappointing. I wasn’t expecting luxury—just a reasonably priced, clean hotel in the Old Town with fairly easy access to the train station. Getting there was harder than expected. The tram ride took longer than I thought, and once I got off, the road to the hotel was uphill, which was tiring with luggage. Even inside, finding the room wasn’t straightforward. The route was so complicated that the staff had to give me detailed directions with a map. The worst part, however, was the noise. The night I stayed, there seemed to be a local festival with a rock band playing nearby. The sound carried straight into the hotel, and the bass guitar was so strong it shook the room and made it impossible to sleep. I kept waiting for it to end, but when I checked the time it was already 12:40 a.m. and the music was still going. I can understand a festival concert lasting until 10 or 11 p.m., but well past midnight was excessive. To make matters worse, the next morning there was no staff available around 6:50 a.m. when we were trying to check out. Because of this delay, we couldn’t use public transport as planned and had to rush to take a taxi instead, which was both stressful and inconvenient. I know the hotel is in an old building, so I didn’t expect perfect soundproofing, but between the noise, the difficult access, and the lack of staff in the morning, the overall experience was frustrating. I booked this place thinking it would be a budget-friendly but decent option in Basel, but it ended up...
Read moreGreat little hotel about 1 mile from the marketplace (where all of the transportation is located - busses, trams). Be prepared to walk up and down the streets. There are plenty of little cafés in the area to dine too - if you want to eat out. At the hotel, the morning breakfast consists of prepared buffet (several choices - eggs, potatoes, yogurt, breads, etc.) and cafe, or you can do the light breakfast of cafe, juice and a croissant. Juilliette is great in this area, and speaks Spanish as well as the local language.
You need to remember this hotel was built in 1899, and thus while it has been modernized, many items are still the old decor and operational in nature. Our room was a sized down version on the second floor towards the back of the hotel. In the room, there is A/C, a place to hang clothes, a small closet with a locking safe, a small refrigerator stocked and everything inside is pay for use, two beds easily put together to act as a queen size bed, and a bathroom with a sink, toilet and shower/tub. Radiators are used to generate heat in the room, if needed.
The only other item to mention is the elevators are small, but then again so are most elevators in Europe.
I gave the hotel 4 stars because there are niceties missing in the more extravagant hotels, but given the age of this one it still has all the items to fulfill the basics.
The staff is friendly and the service met our expectations. I hope your stay is...
Read moreWe were so pleased to stay with Hotel Rochat as we have family that live around the corner. It was a last minute reservation but Christina Z. and her staff went above and beyond to ensure we had a room for all nights of our stay over a long holiday weekend. The room was extremely clean, spacious and had plenty of wardrobe storage. The room was quiet and had A/C if it was needed. Breakfast was a wonderful spread of hot and cold items and well worth the supplemental cost to the room fee. What I like best about this hotel was the variety of guests. There were students, young families, business people and older couples all enjoying their stay in Basel. As for location, there is a lovely park across the street with a botanical garden. Easy transit or walking links to most places in the City. We loved our stay and would highly recommend...
