We often visit Ambleside and have stayed in many of the central hotels/B&Bs over the years. We knew of Brathay Lodge but hadn’t stayed there - although the plentiful on site parking had always appealed. This time, we got a decent price and decided to give it a go. We weren’t disappointed. ||We checked in (conveniently at 2pm) and were shown to our 2nd floor room. There’s no lift but if you have ‘normal’ luggage, it won’t be an issue. Room 17 was very generously sized. It looked recently decorated and had what looked like a new bathroom too. The view was terrific from the bay window. The hills, church, forest and the park below made for a very pleasant vista. Note, there is a busy road below (not an issue from the 2nd floor) and not all rooms have the same view so make a request if you like the sound of it. ||Breakfast is ‘continental’ style but there’s plenty of choice and all good quality. Staff - especially at breakfast - were very welcoming. ||Locationwise - it’s just a few strides to the various bars, shops and restaurants but you can also just head straight off for a walk in the hills too. ||Turned out to be a great choice for us....
Read moreWe had a lovely stay at the Brathay Lodge in mid-August this summer. We arrived late in the evening and the self-check-in instructions were very straightforward. Our room was a triple at the top of the B&B and was just right for our needs. It was clean and airy (great, as there was a heatwave!), with tea, coffee and biscuits lined up to greet us. The fun layout of a curtained alcove for the single bed for the third guest (complete with personal TV!) meant that we felt like we had reserved a small apartment, rather than a hotel room – excellent! The breakfasts were super – a brilliant start to each day and definitely very relaxing. The location is so close to the shops, marina and lovely walks, like the Stock Ghyll Force waterfall, that we hardly used our car. We highly recommend the Brathay Lodge and will certainly be looking to stay there again when we next visit the Lake District! NB: Lots of stairs, no lift, to get to the top - may not suit some. This is basically a guest house, so no lunch or evening meals, but there are lots of food options in Ambleside. Not super cheap, but good...
Read moreTypical decent old fashioned English boutique hotel. We enjoyed a nice stay in the charming mountain village of Ambleside. The location was close to the bus station connecting to Windermere train station, overlooking a minigolf garden a beautiful church, in the background of mountains. The hotel is also very close to restaurants, shops and a charming park with kids play area (Rothay park), and from there hiking tracks. Staff was very helpful, check in was fine. The family room we got was spacious and very clean, bathroom was spotless, plenty of clean towels, Tea/coffee set, DVD for which we could choose from a little library in the reception, but no fridge, no hair drier and no phone. On the negative side, Breakfast was a bit of letdown for us, we were happy to choose a hotel with continental rather than English breakfast, for savory items we were surprised by only boiled eggs, only pork cold cuts and only 2 types of cheese. Pastries were only croissants. the reception is not available in the evening. The building is rather old and squeaky. Prices on...
