I went to do an escape room with some coworkers. We had a party of five. They put us into an escape room with 7 other people. 12 people was way too many people for this escape room.
The space was too small for everyone to participate, so most of us just stood around when we couldn’t get close to the puzzles. There was no puzzle in that room that required 12 people to solve. It really felt like they just wanted to cram as many groups in here to maximize their profits regardless of how it might impact visitor experience.
Also, I have no desire to be stuck in an escape room with strangers. The number of people I know who I would do an escape room with is already a small number; now I have to pay for the privilege of dealing with a random person who is very confidently doing the puzzle wrong, but won’t listen to suggestions from the group.
Another irritating aspect of my experience: our group wanted to add another person to our reservation, but they said no. 13 people in the room would be too many but 12 was fine? Absolutely stupid. So, one member of our group just had to sit out in the lobby. Clearly, having a party of 6 vs 5 would’ve messed with their carefully laid out plans of making sure everyone felt as claustrophobic as possible in the escape room they were assigned to.
The quality of the puzzles and the production value of the room overall was pretty good. If it had just been my group in the room working together, it would have been a fun team building experience. Alas, their strategy of maximizing occupancy meant this was one of the worst escape room experiences I’ve had, and there are definitely better escape room options in Austin you...

As of tonight, I've finally completed every room offered at The Escape Game Austin!! Each visit has been a blast, and staff have consistently exceeded expectations. I made the mistake of waiting till my 4th visit to begin purchasing the 20% discount gift card - it's totally worth it.
Classified Room (October 2021 ish): Despite the incredibly busy atmosphere, the staff treated us to a fantastic experience both in and outside the escape room. Special shout outs to Dominic, Elle, Devon & Hillary for the awesome experience!
Gold Rush Room & Playground (November 2021): While celebrating yet another Tuesday, my group secured the fastest completion of all time, in the history of the world, for the Gold Rush room (confirmation pending). Then after a quick break, and several thousand pleas to get Game Master Joe to join us for another, we bought tickets at a 30% discount for Playground. Armed to the teeth with answers (and Joe), my team and I ventured forth to complete all our assignments before Coach Ronnie’s(?) Summer Kick-Off!! Special shout outs to Sarah and Joe for a SPECTACULAR night – you both elevated the experience, and I am so grateful!
Will gladly return in the future, and will heavily contemplate the idea of a speed run marathon through all rooms – hopefully this will become an accessible option...
Read moreWe have played almost every room here. We've previously done Prison Break, Classified, Gold Rush, and the Heist. They've added three new rooms since we were last here, and we just did Timeliner. It's a time travel/train theme, and it was incredibly fun.
We've done escape rooms in multiple places in Texas and other states. In my opinion, this place is the best overall by far. A lot of smaller escape rooms are a room or two with stuff hung up on the walls. These rooms are purpose built inside to really transport you to the setting. Prison Break has a real prison with full additional settings (don't want to ruin it) for example. Gold Rush has a whole cabin built in like an outdoor setting. We've always been super impressed with the rooms themselves.
The employee assigned to you is incredibly attentive and gives you clues quickly when asked. They're friendly, professional, and they facilitate a great time.
This place is family friendly; our kids have a great time here.
I cannot recommend The Escape Game enough!
NOTE: There is no parking here. We normally park in the paid parking lot right across the street. It is normally affordable. It was $45 today, because they added surcharges for SXSW with no warning. This isn't The Escape Game's fault, but it was a huge unforseen expense with two vehicles of people coming. If you're traveling during a major event like SXSW or ACL, check parking around TEG before coming for more...
