I am sorry to write this review, but it's for safety reasons. We have been staying at Summer Station almost every summer, for 17 years. The set up was perfect for our family: 2 bedrooms, full kitchen, daily housekeeping, and right across the street from the ocean. We booked this year's stay one year ago, because otherwise it is hard to get a reservation. This year we decided to splurge for the ocean front suite, which is $460 a night plus tax. ||Two weeks before our arrival, we received an email from Summer Station, notifying us that "Unfortunately, we are having construction done to the front of our building; the construction will take place Monday - Friday 8AM to 430PM. There will be noise associated with this construction. At this time, we have discounted your stay $15.00 off per night but if you would like to cancel your reservation (for a full refund) please contact us". When we called the hotel for further details, they informed us that the construction is for the purpose of guaranteeing the integrity of the building structure, as a result of increased vigilance about beach front properties, related to the Surfside condo disaster in Miami last year. And that some of the porches from other rooms were unsafe to go on, because there was some separation of the porches from the building. ||This was nerve-wracking, but we decided to go ahead anyway. There was no option to change rooms, the place is booked all summer. But then when we got to Summer Station we learned of another safety issue: when we took the elevator to the 4th floor, the elevator stopped and jerked, and we weren't sure if it was going to open. Thankfully it did, but when I brought this issue to the attention of the hotel staff they said : yes, none of us who work here take the elevator, it is too scary, the owners got estimates to replace it, but it was more that $70,000, so they decided to spend the money instead on repairing the front of the building. ||So we did not take the elevator for the rest of our stay. Last comment: although the scaffolding was up during our stay, there was no construction going on. We learned that the construction has been stalled and they don't know when it will resume.||When we checked out of the hotel and paid our bill, I complained about the elevator, and recommended that they at least put up a sign that they are aware that there is an issue with the elevator, so as not to frighten the guests. The front desk staff person cut me off and told me he didn't to listen to such things.||Needless to say, we did not book for...
Read moreI've literally been coming here with my family since I was 6 months old. So many childhood memories! My parents continue to get a place each summer and invite me, my siblings, and our wives and we still have a great time! I'm 27 now, and my wife and I just reserved an ocean front room for our upcoming wedding anniversary in October and we are so excited! We had a recent stay this week with my parents since they did their annual Cape May vacation. I wanted to make sure to leave a good review in these COVID19 times! The suites are spacious (good for keeping distance from each other!), and very clean! Bedding and towels were provided and also clean. They used to do full maid service each day, but for right now they just replace towels and take trash out, which is totally fine. We chatted with one of the maids (she's been working there almost as long as we have been staying there!) and she said they do a bigger clean between guests checking in/out. Limits contact and makes sure everything is totally clean between parties, so makes sense to me! Can't beat the view and distance from the beach and the town! They prices are great for all that you get, especially compared to other hotels. Checked prices at other places for our October stay, and most places were just a room with a bathroom and maybe a kitchenette if you're lucky for over $250/night, in October! Crazy. But here it's 2 bedroom, bathroom (sometimes 2 bathrooms depending), living room, FULL kitchen, balcony, and an oceanfront was just $170 a night! Absolutely great deal! Summer Station is a fantastic hidden gem (doesn't come up on many Cape May hotel searches, and I think that's saving it from going sideways, honestly) and I'm looking forward to coming here for many more...
Read moreOur family has been coming to summer station for the past 16 years. There’s a sense of nostalgia because it looks exactly the same as it did 16 years ago, but with that comes a lack of upkeep and renovations. The rooms desperately are in need of updates. The carpet is covered with stains, and the furniture is the same furniture as it was 16 years ago. The individual vertical blinds in the common room kept falling off. The WiFi is horrible. There are numerous rust stains in the common areas. Due to covid they are not coming and cleaning the room everyday, but they do offer fresh linens. However, multiple times we found black hairs embedded in the towels. The elevator is very sketchy, and the fear of getting stuck in it is palpable. The pool is very clean. And there’s usually a nice group of families there The manager is completely unaccommodating and rude, however one of the maids who has been working there as long as we have been coming there is the best. She, unlike the manager, is so kind and wonderful! Additionally parking is VERY tight, our SUV only fits in certain spots and sometimes they aren’t available. Location is great. Unfortunately after 16 years, we will not be...
