Que Chula Craft Tacos & Tequila Bar — Restaurant in Chapel Hill

As a first generation Mexican-American I can say that I’ve never tasted Mexican food this delicious at a sit down restaurant! Que Chula offers authentic Mexican food with a modern twist without distorting the cuisine. My fiancé and I ordered take out from Que Chula very frequently during the lockdown in 2020 and we’ve yet to be disappointed. Every single dish we’ve tried is full of flavor and reminds me of my mom and abuelita’s cooking. They aren’t shy about the level of spicy which I appreciate!! Last night was our first time sitting down at Que Chula and the food was just as amazing (if not better) and the drinks were exceptional! Everything from the candy included with my drink to the ceramic plates reminded me of my Mexican childhood. The service was great too! Very friendly and attentive staff even though it was a busy Saturday night. One more note about the beautiful ceramic plates, I looked up where they were from and I believe they are from Cerámica Avalos in Guadalajara, Mexico. Going to their website you can see that they don’t even ship to the US meaning that the Que Chula owners probably brought the plates all the way from Mexico themselves! The food was excellent, but the overall vibe and service left a lot to be desired.

When my wife and I arrived, we were promptly seated, but it felt like we were invisible to our waiter for almost 20 minutes. When they finally came over, their interaction was a bit awkward, and was made with one comment , "should I ask you or you first," which made us feel a tad uncomfortable. The waiter didn't bother to ask if we wanted anything to drink, or suggest anything to us. That was basically the extent of the conversation for the meal.

Despite the tasty food, the abruptness of dropping the check before we finished eating, without checking in on us or asking if we'd like dessert, left a sour taste in our mouths.

As a couple who values inclusivity, we were disappointed by the lack of sensitivity from the staff. While we enjoyed the food, the overall experience fell short. We are a queer couple and have experienced discrimination before, and while we hope this wasn't, it definitely raised some concerns.

Obviously this waiter could have been new, or been having a bad day, but it's definitely been some of the worst customer service we've seen...

The restaurant is spotless, and the attention to cleanliness is impressive. It’s clear that Marco and his team take great pride in maintaining a welcoming and comfortable environment. The atmosphere is lively yet relaxing—perfect for enjoying authentic Mexican cuisine.
