My husband and I rented our place at the Charlestonian so that we could attend the Charleston Food and Wine Festival, and extend our stay while working remotely over a two week period in order to immerse ourselves in the food and culture of Charleston.||We stayed at The Charlestonian’s Proprietors Penthouse, Unit C at 68 Cannon St, and we are just going to say —WOW! This property, for us, turned out to be in the best location and was such an incredible stay! It is in the Cannonborough/Elliotborough neighborhood about three blocks from King St, but yet in its own neighborhood with its own vibe and restaurants/ bars that we particularly enjoyed (Malagon, Chubby Fish, Tippling House, Vern’s). Well over half of our incredible dining experiences took place within a 10 minute walk around this neighborhood, including a must-eat-at restaurant right next door, Southbound (if you see Shane, the restaurant’s hospitality/beverage director during your stay, he might offer you a nice tour of the restaurant!) ||Our contacts at the Charlestonian, George, the owner, and Randall one of the hospitality experts, kept in contact with us until check-in and gave us a warm welcome and great advice and recommendations on both Charleston and the neighborhood. George put so much thought into every detail of renovating and retaining the feel of this historic property while adding some modern touches. We truly appreciated the heart and soul of this place!||The apartment was appointed with amazing amenities too. The kitchen was a cook’s dream: La Cornue range, Mauviel Copper cookware, top knotch appliances both large and small. Although we are food and wine lovers and enjoy cooking at home, we did not plan on doing a ton of cooking in Charleston because we wanted to explore the diverse food scene. But the times we did cook, we had everything we could possibly need and then some! Although we had grocery shopped prior to arrival (can’t be without our coffee first thing in am), we were pleasantly surprised to see they had stocked the kitchen with coffee, filters, a French Press and a nice autodrip coffee machine. Plus, there are several neighborhood coffee shops to check out only a few blocks away (Baba’s and Holey City Bagel) and a lovely cafe (Ladles) in the basement of the building where you can get great soups/sandwiches and not even have to leave the block!||We had two bedrooms and each room had comfortable, classy beds/pillows and linens. We had another couple stay with us three nights of our two week adventure, and they said the same. Downstairs there is a bedroom with an adjoining bathroom and nice rain shower and upstairs, a master bedroom and bathroom appointed with a gorgeous copper soaking tub with shower attachment. So if you are staying with another couple, there is plenty of privacy with the bedrooms and bathrooms. There is also a cozy reading room upstairs and a small reading nook downstairs, both stocked with interesting books. Other nice amenities included ample supply of towels, toilet paper, shampoo/conditioner and body wash, and washer/dryer which got us through our stay. We were on the top floor of the property, which we liked, because the outdoor porch faces Cannon Street and gave us great visibility to watching the world go by first thing in the morning and again in the evening. Something to note: there is a narrow, spiral staircase to get up to the apartment so we would not recommend bringing your largest pieces of luggage, as managing a large piece takes some maneuvering.||We walked to The Battery down by the water, Cooper’s pedestrian bridge, French Quarter, City Market, pretty much all around the historic district, and walkable from this location if you like to walk—plenty of places to stop, rest and refuel if needed. Just make sure to bring comfortable walking shoes as uneven pavement/cobbles can toss you quickly! We recommend leaving the car parked at your spot at the Charlestonian and either walk (or ride share) as parking in Charleston is limited. ||We would highly recommend staying with The Charlestonian and hope to...
Read moreThis is a beautifully renovated space and the location is great. Not much else was good about my stay. There was very loud construction on the property that began early in the morning and lasted most of the day when I stayed Jan. 1-3, 2023. A heads up from hotel staff would have been a standard customer service move, but that didn’t happen. It doesn’t look like construction will finish any time soon—a heads up in case you plan on sleeping in, enjoying the patios or outdoor space, or working remotely from the property, all things I had planned to do. I stayed in Suite F, which I do not recommend. It is a basement suite (I wasn’t aware of this since the website doesn’t show basement photos or mention that any suite is basement level) and shares a very thin wall with the kitchen of the restaurant on the property, Ladles. Every morning were woken up before dawn by employees talking and the loud clanking of pots and pans, and the very strong smell of food like bacon and onions. When booking the hotel, I had the option to make a request and asked if it’d be possible to have a six-pack of local beer. The hotel staff texted me to arrange and confirmed by email that the request would be fulfilled. I texted and emailed back multiple times to ask for the receipt so I could pay them via PayPal for the beer like we had discussed. I never received a response. There was no beer when I arrived and they never gave us the beer. No big deal and I understand that they were likely busy with the holiday and managing the construction across the property, but acknowledgement through a response would have been appreciated even if the request wasn’t going to be fulfilled. I often see businesses responding to reviews online saying that they wish the customer or guest would have told them about issues as they were experiencing them so they could have the chance to respond to them as they were happening. Given that staff hadn’t responded to multiple messages I sent before and during my stay, I didn’t feel confident that they’d address any issues during my stay if I had reached out. Plus I don’t know what they could have done about the construction on their property or the loud noise or smell from the restaurant. I did email them after our stay about the issues so that maybe they could make some changes to improve future guests’ stays, but I never...
Read moreIf you want to turn a lovely property into an old house nightmare, just read this review:||||Upon arrival to what was supposed to be a first floor apartment, we were TOLD that we now had a second floor apartment with only a spiral staircase as an entry...24 steps. ||||Later the next evening, when the owner confused my Cayenne with that of a similar color but with different license plates, she called my cell phone (5) times while I was attending a business dinner to move my car, until I finally answered the call, only to advise her that she had the wrong car. ||||Same as other reviews....Diluted shampoo, poor A/C, smelly refrigerator, etc...||||It gets better: I paid a large deposit a month prior to our visit via my Chase credit card (clearly reliable), only to have Morgan the owner claim she never received the deposit. Despite pictures of the entry from my statement forwarded to her, she falsely denied receiving it and attempted to bill us the full amount upon departure. Only after insisting upon a corrected invoice less deposit received upon our departure, did we pay the final balance due which she acknowledged receiving.||||Issue over....??? Nope !!!||||Amazingly while checking my credit card statement a week later, did I astonishingly notice that she double charged us for the entire bill again, knowing that she was paid in full for our stay. This was no mistake ! I have called several times, received one return text and no removal of the double charge ! Chase Fraud has been contacted as has the 3rd party booking company; one that I have used globally for 10+ years with never a problem.||||Sorry.....Buyer...
