As someone who stayed at a CHC property for a period of ~5 months, I highly recommend avoiding this company entirely. CHC demonstrated a complete disregard for their tenants and their tenants' rights. This is the first review I've ever written about a company — my experience was THAT terrible.
I rented by the month at the 515 Rutledge property and had a generally positive experience for the first few months. I decided to extend my stay for another month in May. Big mistake.
Completely unbeknownst to me, CHC decided to completely renovate the unit I was staying in — my direct living space, kitchen, and surrounding units. Note this was not something that was mentioned AT ALL when extending my lease for the month.
Within days of me extending my stay, I woke up at 8AM to the sound of violently loud construction in the neighboring unit with which I shared a wall. When I say loud, I mean shake-the-floor and knock-things-off-the-closet-rack loud. I wish I could attach a video to the review.
It was only when I asked my CHC point of contact, Wendy, what was going on that she explained this massive construction project. This incredibly invasive construction continued every single weekday, approximately 8:30am - 5:30pm (sometimes later) for the rest of the month. I work from home and would have to relocate during the day to avoid the noise. This was truly an extreme violation of my tenant right to quiet enjoyment of the space (SC law). The noise severely limited my ability to be productive with work.
About a week into my lease, CHC called me and told me that I would have to move to a different unit within the next few days due to construction on the unit I was staying in. NONE of this was communicated to me beforehand. I did as they asked and moved all of my belongings into the unit they prepared for me (it took hours to pack my belongings and set up in the new unit). This rental unit did not have a closet to store my things or clothing rack to hang my clothes, and simply was the not the unit I had decided to rent at the start of the lease term. The construction and the formidable noise continued while I was in the new unit. Multiple times the handyman came into my unit with no notice and would do construction in my actual unit while I was working/on calls/etc. Multiple times my water was shut off with less than an hours notice. Note that landlords in SC are required to give tenants 24hrs of notice on work like this unless it is an emergency otherwise it is legally harassment.
As part of my lease, I had access to a shared kitchen which I used for most meals. One day I went to cook dinner and was horrified to find that a literal wall had been built between me and the kitchen (where I had ~$400 worth of groceries and supplies). The construction of this wall was never communicated to me. I was never made aware that I would no longer have access to the kitchen. For the remainder of my lease I now had to eat every meal out ($25-$30/meal) and let my groceries go to waste. They didn't even have to courtesy to tell me that they were constructing the wall so that I could give away my groceries to someone before rotting.
A few days later, I get a text from Wendy that I now have to move BACK to my original unit. I again pack up all of my belongings and change units, wasting hours of my time. I pack my stuff up, and realize I had no place to put it because the area that used to be my closet was now a 'kitchenette' (photo attached). The kitchenette was entirely unusable by the way, as the microwave door could not be opened due to the stove, and the stove could not be used due to the toaster on top of the stove...
After throwing fit, they did refund me for the days that I stayed in the unit I didnt't rent (about a week). CHC did not refund me for the groceries I threw away, CHC did not reimburse me for the meals I was forced to eat out, and CHC did not provide any reparation for the extreme violation of my quiet enjoyment of the space and diminished ability to be productive at work.
Complete disregard for tenants and South...
Read morePoor experience with Airbnb owned by CHC Vacation Rentals, Fallon Devine, Perfect Downtown Location, Charleston, SC. In the mist of Covid 19 and the challenges of traveling at this time, we were disappointed that neither Fallon or Airbnb would refund (nor give us a credit) of our $670 deposit. Let me summarize the situation: My friend and I booked our trip to Savannah/Charleston back in October 2019. Our original dates of travel were March/April 2020. With the onset of the pandemic and our optimistic belief that we would be able to travel again, in early March, we contacted our Airbnb hosts and changed our reservations to September. They both agreed and extended the reservations until September. In June, we cancelled our Airbnb reservation for both Savannah and Charleston. We did this for several reasons Instances of COVID-19 and resulting deaths increasing in our country Restrictions put on place by our Governor for travel to New York from South Carolina Nothing in the data indicating that the pandemic would be over (or a vaccine/cure would be ready) by September. My personal health issues of diabetes and hypertension. Advice from the CDC and my own physician indicated that individuals with these conditions are more vulnerable for serious health implications from COVID and should NOT travel. In good faith, we wanted to give our hosts plenty of notice and opportunity to rebook if possible. Our Savannah host did refund our money except for $81.45 in fees which we appreciated. However, our host, Fallon, in Charleston, refuses to refund us our $670. When we reached out to the Airbnb Resolution Department, the Resolution Representative was not able to resolve this issue for us. He was professional and kind but simply quoted standard cancellation. At his request, we provided him my personal health information and a letter from my doctor. Bottom line, no refund. We have written to Airbnb CEO, Brian Chesky as well and are awaiting a reply (so far 2 certified letters have been lost in the mail).
We find this unacceptable and unethical. Our Charleston host has $670 of our money for services we are not receiving due to the pandemic. Airbnb’s own extenuating circumstances policy was recently extended to end of September. In good faith, we gave plenty of notice of cancellation. We feel strongly that an exception should be allowed for this pandemic. Airbnb has stepped up to provide assistance to their hosts in this financially difficult time. We are shocked that they are not supporting their customers in the same fashion. Be aware if you are booking...
Read moreCHC Rentals is the best home away from home. I stayed with them for my clinical rotation for 6 weeks. The unit was clean, comfortable, and in a GREAT location. You can easily go downtown to King street, hop on the highway to head to the beaches about 20 minutes away, or head to the Publix that is about 7 minutes away! As a young woman staying alone in a new city, I was originally a little nervous to stay in a house that had multiple units. However, that nervousness quickly disappeared. The units are all very safe and secured. In addition, the neighborhood is safe too. I felt comfortable to walk alone a few blocks to restaurants. There are always young adults and families walking around checking out the area as well! The shared washer and dryer was easy to access and I had no problem using them with the other units I shared it with. The mini kitchenette was perfectly equipped for making easy meals in it. The parking is a little tight, but I loved that it was a private lot at the back of the house. In addition, CHC has cameras to monitor the security of the property. This brought me a lot of peace of mind and I felt so comfortable staying there. The staff is easily accessible for anything you need and always happy to help. I had a question and they quickly responded and went above and beyond to help me out. They are dedicated to making sure your stay with them is of the highest quality. I had no problems with my unit and if I find myself in the area again I will stay with CHC and...
